I just saw that someone was getting one at some point but lost the thread and who it was that said that, but I am super interested. I don't know Duke personally but my few chats with him have been kind and helpful. He seems to really know his stuff and while I would love to have some of his home audio stuff, well lets just say I'm not home much. :ninja:

Anyway, while I am incredibly happy with my fEarfuls, I would love to learn more about what Audiokinesis can do for us low end thumpers.

So lay it on me if you know anything about it.

I expect they'll be similar. There's very much a right way and a wrong way to build bass reflex bass cabs. fEarful is an example of the right way, and stands in stark contrast to the cookie cutter standard. Since Duke knows the right way to build a cab as well you can expect them to have a lot in common.

yeah, they do have some stuff in common...they both use kappalite lf's and duke and greenboy have bounced many an idea off each other. but that's about where it ends. that's not meant as a slight on the fearful at all, but i think it ratchets it up a notch, mos def. can't say too much about it, but they'll have two 3012lf's and instead of a mid cone, duke is going with a mid horn. a pretty tricked out mid horn, too. but duke likes the horn over the cone. i was skeptical at first because i like to use distortion, but even though the horn in the prototype needed to be taken down a couple notches, it was really smooth and took distortion very well. turns out treble sounds pretty darn good if it's not coming out of a single piezo ;)

but his design will blow minds at first and there's going to be a lot of initial skepticism that it can work as well as he says it does, but judging by the prototype, it works even better than duke thinks it does. i think not only for bass, but it will be amazing for small pa's that the band has to mix themselves from the stage. you can take my thoughts with a grain of salt since i helped him test them, but i'm buying two of them, and i'll be using them for both bass and occasional small pa duties. not paying full price exactly but it's still good money i'm forking out, and i don't part with a buck easily.

That's more of a form rather than function aspect. In both cases you get superior midrange dispersion and response, and no octave wide hole between where the woofer stops and a tweeter starts. Different roads, same destination.

he said one big reason for using it was because he could get it to match the dispersion pattern of the 3012lf at the crossover point. i must admit that because it was so bright at home, i was skeptical till i took it on a soundcheck and dialed it into a mix, and holy moley did it sound smooth and not at all potato-chippy like single piezos.

it's a whole new world for me...first time i ever had any desire to do a cab like this one. but the results were there and couldn't be denied.

i know what he means, though. duke did delay sending me the prototype because he wanted taller feet on the cab. it was to help the design, but he does sweat the details and maybe that can be interpreted as good ocd.

I posted about it in the fEarful thread just after I tried the prototype at the last Seattle GTG. Duke drove up there all the way from Idaho to get some player feedback, and we had a great hang. I am expecting to gig test the prototype as soon as it's made a few rounds with some other testers, but my impression was that I could happily do the vast majority of my gigs with just one of these little cabs. We had my 12/6 and my nEarful 15/6/1 there for comparison purposes, and there's a definite familial connection. Ken Jung has one on order too -- that may be where you saw it?

One big draw is the fact that it uses a proprietary 4 ohm 3012LF, so any of the 300-500 watt @ 4 ohm mini amps will potentially be a good match. There are some details and a pic at Duke's web forum.

OCD means doing the same thing repetitively with never any variation in routine...like starting a new speaker company and cranking out the same old cookie cutter cabs that have been around longer than most bassplayers have.:D
No good engineer is OCD, as every good engineer is always searching for better ways of doing things. Duke would fall into this category. :smug:

Per Passinwinds post, I already put my cash down and have one of the first production models on the way, supposedly in late July if all goes well.

I love trying this new stuff (I'm a pretty lucky guy to get to check out many of the LDS cabs prior to shipping).

Duke's cab is kind of a super duper version of the original Bergantino HT cabs (IMO).... a deeply voiced woofer, and then a super quality high frequency horn crossed over very low to cover the upper mids on up. I like the idea of his proprietary/revised 3012LF being 4ohms, which will work very nicely as a stand-alone cab with moderately powered micro heads.

I like his idea also of putting in a switchable lo pass filter to soften the top end from that big horn, which will work well for some players.

I look forward to getting the cab. I also have a 12/6/1 from LDS in the pipeline, which is the 'other way' to execute this idea of a deeply voiced, high xmax driver (similar to Acme and the old EA VL cabs).;

i did, however, tell duke that he can send my second cab to bowlus and chef for a little eval before they send it to me, though. i saw charlie's pic of the cab duke brought to the gtg, and it looks like a winner, too. but i'm still glad i went for the bigger version. can't wait to smack 'em with 300w of svt glory!
