Maybe they meant 87. Looks like it could have been one of the deluxe/special/whatever basses from the 80s with the bat-wing bridge.
It has no strings but the neck plays smoothly.

I think the lack of strings helps with the "pitch range is very precise and articulate".
He's claiming a serial # of S8xxxxx on an all-original bass, so it's supposed to be a '78

Could be legit- I've seen those bridges before. Beyond that, who cares if the seller doesn't know how to restring the thing? I'd certainly try to check it out.
Anyone who knows fender knows S8 means 78-83 at least. S8 with period correct features is 78, sometimes 79 although there were S9 numbers. S8 with 80s features is an 80s bass. This has the funky bridge of an 80s special edition bridge, as well as an 80s headstock logo. I don't have my fender book, so I can't tell what model it was, but I'm sure someone will chime in with a better clue.

Fender sold that bridge (called 'the Claw') as an upgrade. Fender didn't put it on their basses, though the Precision Specials had a smaller brass bridge and that gold string tree. That headstock logo looks wrong, though.
The bridge is the only real Fender piece I see. Yes it is the Fender Claw accessory bridge.

The "Claw" was one of a a whole mess of brass accessories Fender sold. The brass works included bridges for the Strat, Tele, and the basses, the Claw, a bass thumb-rest, knobs for Strat trem arms, nuts, string retainers for both bass and guitars, control knobs (both the domed ones used on Precisions and the skirted ones used on Strats, don't think they had any of the ones with large knurles like they used on Jazz basses), etc. Remember, at that time if it was brass it HAD to be better!
