My new Lakland LOG bass has arrived. Ordered it last May (?), and got it today. 5 strings, blocks, binding, very sweet.

For those who may not know, this is a limited run of 30 basses. Most of them were bought by LOG members (who helped finalize the look of it). The remainder are being sold through Bass Club Chicago. (I have no affiliation with the store or Lakland.)

Good one. Just fat fingers, but strangely appropriate. The bass is a beauty. Plays great, sounds good. May have to put some flats on it, as my ears and fingers just like them better I think.

FINALLY GOT TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH MINE TODAY!!! YAHOO!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

fit and finish: excellent!

Grain and color: WOW! nicer than anticipated

arrived pretty much in tune

LOG on the SN - how sweet is that!?

Neck feels SLIGHTLY more rounded than US necks I have....looks a little more so as well.

Sure like the PLEK feel....very fast and sweet!

I have the vintage pick up.

A/B with my Nordy P5PJ (P pickup only)...interesting....US PJ5 pickup installed 2 up/3 down and this one is 3 up/2 down - not sure if that makes a difference!

The Vintage is more mid-rangy than the Nordy. The Nordy appears to have more really low lows and a higher top end (even comparing nickles on the US vs.SS on the LOG bass.....teh Nordy also appears to have slightly more volume output....played them both wide open on the same amp.

Very even tone across the neck and no dead spots at all.

Sounds growly and more like the Fralins...I am glad that my 2 Lakie P5s sound different...that is what i was after!

I will be using this tomorrrow in church and will let you all know how she/he sits in the mix!!!!

I have the prototype; it's Nord Powered.
Reading the comments on the Vintage pickup. I'm glad that's what I have as it definitely suits my prefs.

Very nice Doug. I hope you guys are proud of what you helped bring about. The gods know that if I'd had the money... or the hope of having it any time soon, I'd have ordered one as well.

What made you go with the maple fretboard, in the end?

That more rounded neck would be an issue for me, though: the neck on Echo is probably my favourite neck. It's nice and flat front to back like my Godin, but not as narrow side-to-side -- as I'm pretty sure you remember from *your* old amber 55-02.

When I say that the rounded neck would be 'an issue,' I don't mean that I wouldn
't be able to play it, just that it's too bad they toyed with something that I found perfect. Maybe a bit of a homage to the Fender P? The neck on mine is noticeably rounder than on my Lakkie...

As for those pickups, that's a very interesting comparison. I'd have to hear them in person to decide which I like better, I think. Oh, and I think that I've seen mostly 3 up, 2 down, like on my Fender:

I sure wish those pickups on teh LOG bass had the asymmetrical covers like on mine above, though. I don't like the blank spot on all these symmetrical 5ver P pups -- unless there's a coil extension in that space or something. As it is, I suspect that it's just an empty space, which I don't like for the same reason I don't like suits with fake pockets.

Though I guess that all bass players hate fake pockets... Aw, I should just shut up while I'm ahead.
