58 jazzmaster bass?

hello everyone...i am in the process of buying a vintage fender jazz and i had a few questions...the bass in question is a 58 fender jazzmaster V..he said its basically a jazz bass...i didnt think there were jazz basses that early on and ive been searching for 2 days and cant seem to find anything at all even close to what he described...he said he had a friend run the serial num and its def a 58....any thoughts? thanks-joep

The first Jazz bass made from Fender came out sometime in 1960 if I recall. The concept of the modern 5-string wasn't even at conception stage yet.

sounds completely bogus to me. can you show us some kind of link or photos of what he's selling? whatever it is, be careful....it's not a '58 Jazz, or Jazzmaster Bass, as neither existed.

The JazzMaster was around in 1958. It is not the same as a Jazz bass.

the very earliest jazz bass that i've ever laid my hands on belonged to a friend of mine and it was a 100% original prototype. it had a one piece maple neck (super skinny) and it was pencil dated 11-59 on the end of the neck.

so, the seller is being (ALOT) less than honest.

in '65 Fender made the Fender V tuned EADGC. But it really didn't turn out well.

i dont think the old guy is lying to me as he got his info elsewhere about the dates ect...im sure this is just a 68 fender jazz bass....he got it new in 70 and has had it since...at the price im getting it for its worth it either way..i know for a fact its an original vintage jazz...haha i just wish i knew exactly what it was...im getting it on the 5th so ill post pics and serials and see if anyone can help me id this thing...thanks guys..-joep

Maybe a Fender V. Their body is slighty like a Jazzmaster with the stubby cutaways.

I think this bass became 10 years younger, and the model name changed, between your two posts.

Only Jazzmaster basses I've seen are those custom jobs the dude made on here with the MM pickup and the fancy wiring. They looked awesome.

Never was a Jazzmaster bass. The Bass V was produced between 1965 and 1970 and is easily identifiable in that it has 5 strings and only 15 frets. The body and pickup more closely resembles that of the Mustang bass than the Jazzmaster guitar. If he bought it new in 1970, it could well be a 1968 Fender V. They were not at all successful.
