The way bass "should" sound

I drove six hours to Indianapolis to see him (and hang with a dear old friend) in '11 when Hyphenated-Man came out. The encore was a five song Minutemen set. Tom Watson sang all the D. Boon parts. Listening to this with better audio (from the soundboard?), it's nuts how much he sounds like D. Boon.

I've seen him with "Bluey," I've seen him with the Telecaster that had Gibson bass humbuckers installed (Porno for Pyros), and I've seen him with an SG EB... watt must have borrowed that Ric (and rig). I've never seen him with one, or that much overdrive. He used a d.o.d. distortion pedal for Second-Man's Middle Stand, but I've never heard it before as part of his "sound." It's amazing that regardless of equipment, watt will make it sound like himself.

If this was the DownBeat blindfold test, I'd say that it's the best watt impersonation I've ever heard, but it can't be him because of equipment.

Nuts. I'm listening to this on my tablet with headphones, but had to pull out the laptop to type an in-depth watt post. I love it.

Yeah somebody posted this somewhere and it absolutely blew my mind. You can hear every bit of passion that comes out of those hands... he just gives it everything he has every time he plays. I'm inspired by that even more than his off-the-chain playing itself...

What a ridiculous and subjective question. It is like asking what piece of art is the right art? To indicate that one bass tone is the right one fundamentally ties the hands of the musician, throws out a huge array of music styles and genres, and for all intents and purposes narrows the mind to a point where creativity is completely stifled. All you have to do is look at this member's Forum name to see that his mind is already closed to diversity. I would go so far as to throw out the term "Tone Racist".
Music should have no limits, borders, absolutes, or "rightness". The lack of rules in music is what makes it great.

Freddy Washington and his Smith are my vote! i first heard this song in 92 on the smooth jazz station 'the wave' in LA. When the vocals opened i stopped what i was doing and then the bass kicked in (around :30) and i was hooked. Amazing album i still listen to and the best bass sound pt 1.

Round 2: Mr King.
When i first heard this song on an old cassette in 98 i had to pull my car over. This was the most amazing bass playing i had ever heard. And to think he sings on top of parts like this is unfathomable. This version is faster than the original 20plus years ago. And its the way a bass 'should' sound pt 2.
