Obviously there is no single answer to this, but I thought it would be fun to get people to post clips with their favorite bass tones. I'll start. The first 1:20 of this is pretty close to the "sound in my head."

There are many tones I like and that is perfectly paired to his soulful, expressive and harmonic playing. Very nice.
I actually started this thread because I was thinking about the way Gilmour's bass playing sounds on "Pigs (Three Different Ones." Pratt's tone is completely different than that but also super cool. Makes me want to get a Ric for that special "bite" it has.David Gilmour - One Of These Days (Live at Pompeii 2016) - YouTube
I'm chasing Guy Pratt's tone like an addict looking for their next fix.
That's some of my favorite work by Flea.
I'd also nominate this, both for the melodic nature of his composition and the smooth, full tone. I'm specifically talking about the verse line that starts at :24.

You know, I play Fender flats. I like them a lot. And I've had others recommend La Bella or D'Addario. But I may have to check out the Dunlop ones. I want to look into the custom gauge options he mentioned in the video.True, but you picked mine too. That video made me a P Bass player, with Dunlop flats, and I get pretty close. Can’t get enough of it nor can those that I gig with.
