Truly depends on the context. Jamerson's Motown tone was so good it almost became the default tone producers looked for. Highly unlikely Chris Squire's Ric would have made '60's soul quite as memorable. Conversely, Jamerson could have been a bit lost in the mix on some Yes tunes. One CD with fantastic bass tone (as well as tasteful playing) is "Innocence Ballet" by Alfie Zappacosta. Etric Lyons was perfect on that.

The question is if your favourite bass give you the feel you need or not, i prefer to have a good bass with good tones that i appreciate playing than changing a lot of basses following the ideal sound.
