The way bass "should" sound

I thought so. Sure sounds like it! I was never much of a gear head in my early days, I just listened.
Funny story, I put a J neck on my P bass, and then only after that I learned that’s what Duck Dunn did!
His tone is not bad.
He plays it strange though.
Which is fine, just a conversational observation.
Seems like he's letting a delay do all the work.
It sounds really mechanical.
Roger didn't play it like that.
Always dug this one.
But Chris Wood is who inspired me to finally give in and get a P bass. Haven't looked back.

I have no one favorite sound that's "what bass should sound like." I like being able to get a variety of sounds from new roundwound twang to thumpy dead hollowbody thunk. And that's why I have a few basses and not just one. The only sounds I don't care for are bridge pickup-forward sounds like Jaco used to get and very bright tweetery sounds like Marcus Miller. Great players who revolutionized bass and I love listening to their stuff sometimes, but I hate those sounds.
Yes he did. He even hits a note at the beginning of it where you can clearly hear the delay.
Stupidly simple but anytime its ran through good speakers I get goose bumps.
Fair enough, what I'm hearing I guess is the fact that it was originally double-tracked, hard panned, and one bass has the tone all the way down.
Bass has so many different sounds that like a Lay's chip, you just can't eat one

This one gave me something to think about as it sat up front in the mix and was so well balanced tone wise and clean.
This guy showed me how to get gritty.
These brothers put together a "Modern sound" that was a revelation at the time. Particularly tracks 5,6,9 what tone ...Thank you Mr Haslip
And of course my two Rocks were Geddy and Chuck. Two completely different tonal palettes that opened my eyes.

Never knew that before you told me, but I've never listened to it with headphones, either. Just listened to it, and it's definitely two tracks. But the bassy bass track sounds to me like he's just hitting the one until he plays an A, then he holds it out till he goes back to B. Then the echo track carries the off beats.

6:26 You know what's comin' lol!! And I'm not even normally a big fan of picked bass or playing close to the bridge. Roger Waters is the exception for me. I've always loved his tone and his lines. Simple, effective and instantly recognisable.
P-bass + Hiwatt has always been a particular favourite of mine. Luckily I've got about 15 of the former + a really nice specimen of the latter. But my DR201 only sounds THAT great when played WAY to loud for any practical purpose. I'm only hanging on to it for my tour of Roman amphitheaters.
I should probably get a DR103 instead...

I have zero use for his tone, but the guy is an amazing composer.
