Flea and John F together are magical. The counterpoint, tone, groove, everything.
It's as much Flea's creating the tone than some knob configuration.
And the switch to legato notes in the chorus, awesome

Great band, great song, great musicians, great bass playing and tone. Saw these guys (Gov't Mule) about 15 years ago at a small venue in Toledo, Ohio. They signed their live CD for me and I got a guitar pick from Warren. Very memorable night!
Back when CD's were a new thing, we used to use this song to EQ the PA before sound check. It's well recorded and sparse enough to hear all the instruments. To me this is a definitive P bass sound with just a little wool on it. The bass in the concert shots seem to show a PJ bass with EMG's.

That Roots & Grooves record is badass beginning to end. You'll enjoy it.
Boz Burrell's Ampeg on the first couple of Bad Company albums was terrific. The late Jerry Rightmer with the Sanford Townsend Band had a righteous P bass tone.
There's a lovely story about the Stranglers playing in a punk club in France back in the day. The French punks were into spitting and they were doing just that to the band, so the band stopped dead and told them to quit it (seems that it was not the done thing back in London), but the French punks kept it up so JJB whipped off his Fender and clubbed the spitter in front of him in the head, dropped the guy on the spot (a P bass will do that). No more spitting from that point on. (And the P bass was probably still in tune.) Ahhh, nostalgia...
