Delay question

Hey all. Looking for the simplest delay pedal to accomplish a simple task. Really just want a slight delay between striking the sting and the note sounding. Don't want any further repeats of the note. Less knobs the better. Not too experienced with delay pedals. What'd be the easiest way to accomplish this?

Just for clarity, are you looking for something that will completely eliminate the original note and only play the delayed note? Or something that will play the original note, then a single echo shortly after?

Ooh, yeah, that's a little more uncommon. You need something that has either separate wet and dry controls, or a blend knob that can go to 100% wet. I believe the Way Huge Auqa-Puss will do it (though I'm not 100% sure if the blend will go 100% wet). But I'm sure a delay guru will be by with more ideas.

It's probably going to be the more complicated digital pedals that do what you want. For example the classic Line6 DL-4 will let you control the length of delay, the number of repeats and dry/wet levels so that you can only hear the first repeat.

On the upside, there are a LOT of pedals can do the same thing, and they're cheap on the used market. They're not going to be simple two-knob analog units, tho.

I'm sure many digital delays can achieve this, but I know that the TC Electronic Nova Delay will, because I own one. They're no longer in production, but they seem to be plentiful and pretty inexpensive on the used market. I'm mostly an analogue delay (and everything else) kinda guy, but none of mine will do a 100% wet output, although they will all to a single repeat slapback type echo. The beauty of the Nova delay is that you can dial the delay time down to 1 ms (or up to 2290 ms) with a digital readout. No doubt the current 2290 models will also do this, but they're considerably more expensive.

I mentioned the Line6 DL4 'cause that's my main tool, I don't have a whole lot of experience with other digital delays.

Any of the oversized digital delays from Boss, Korg, TC Electronic etc. should also be capable of it, I was considering a couple of them when I decided on the DL4. Most manufacturers keep documentation online for their legacy products so you can do some research.

Like I mentioned above, at a minimum the pedal has to have the ability to configure these parameters: Length of delay, number of repeats, dry/wet levels (some use a balance, some have separate volume controls).

Sometimes there is a 'feedback' or 'trail' parameter, meaning how long the echos take to fade away, instead of 'repeats'. If you set that to minimum you get only one repeat. On some pedals, number of repeats and trail are different parameters so, for example, you can have repeats piling up without fading.

They also have a Plethora x1 which is a little more money, but if this is the only reason for wanting a delay pedal, you'd have a pedal capable of many other fx too.

You want a latency control basicaly.

Iirc the Ehx Memory Toy will do 100% wet and with the feedback at 0 does just one repetition. Just three knobs, analog, it sounds great (at least with guitar, I haven't tried one with bass) and is fairly cheap.

I wonder if the JHS 3 Series Delay would work. It’s a cheap price and simple layout. I don’t have experience with it so I don’t know if the digital setting at full wet mix would work.

A Zoia with a Delay Line module would do this but that’s an overkill pedal here. I’m not aware of any other “delay line” pedals but I’ll search for them. If anyone knows of them feel free to beat me to the punch.

i assume you are applying this to live performance, I think there would be a number of ways to easily do this on a recording...

when you write 'slight' delay, how slight do you mean. are we talking latency or are we talking pocket or are we talking beats

Boss dd3, put a dummy plug in the direct out and use the output jack to your amp.
The only potential issue is do you know how much of a delay you are looking for?
The minimum setting on the dd3 is 12.5ms.
