Round wounds vs. flats on a "J"

Try playing the jazz with only the neck pickup on, and roll the tone off about a quarter turn, if you haven't already tried it.

What's your philosophy on strings? Same strings on all/most basses or different strings on all/most basses?

I have two basses.A Jazz bass with Fender flats, and a second Jazz bass with well-broken-in D'Addario XL rounds. I tend to stick to these string types, although I've just bought some Fender nickel rounds on a whim...

All purpose strings on a p-bass for rocknroll/country

I'd like to put forward Fender flats. Mid-forward tone that's definitely not muddy. That being said, I do like played in D'Addario XLs on a P Bass too..

Which Light-Gauge Flatwounds Have The Most SHINY Chrome-like Mirror Appearance?

Someone mentioned Galli Jaz Flats on another thread as being "highly polished" No idea how chrome-like they are though

Ideas for full-band PA in tiny low-volume venues

I've just played a small gig with one of the yamaha stick systems (can't remember the name, the one without the mixer built in). Small soundcraft analogue mixer (8fx). Two vocals, bass, drum machine, guitar and sax. It was more than enough. We set it behind us and could hear everything clearly.

Suggest a fairly straightforward mixer for beginners

Maybe it's just the EFX8 that doesn't have it. Good news.

Suggest a fairly straightforward mixer for beginners

I have a Soundcraft EFX 8. Sounds great, really nice effects, and easy to use. The EFX 12 version would be ideal, except for the fact tbere's no USB for recording..

    Money or love?

Precisely this. I love playing, but why should I give up my Saturday night to make other people money without getting some for myself, to compensate for the hours of practicing, gear investment and unsociable hours.

Active P type with flatwounds question

Bernard Edwards had a pretty tasty tone with flats on his active Stingray...

    2x10 vs 1x12

I find my Markbass 1x12 sounds middly and lacking in bass on it's own in my house, but sounds fantastic on stage, with none of the boomy lows I've experienced with other amps

Dream Amp - Which one and Why?

To be honest, I'm happy with my Markbass

    Super-boomy FOH

Ridiculous subs are the problem, imo...

Roundwounds that sound more like flats

I had the same dilemma about 5 years ago. Imo, dead rounds don't sound at all like flats. I persevered with the feel and now I actually prefer them to rounds, and I can interchange easily between the two. These were Fender 9050s on a jazz bass.

I really don't understand how we are supposed to afford this

If you've ever been in a cover band you'll realise that that's not true at all, especially when it comes to commitment, musicianship, etc
