Ref warranty and strings ... I was under the impression that any brand of strings (other than factory originals) will void the warranty if you send the bass back for any warranty work. So follow Thiocyclist's advice about the original strings.

Yeah ---- that is for sure ! Paul's restorations and refinishings of Rickenbackers are legendary ! ;) I had the pleasure of visiting his workshop in the Bay Area a few years ago, and it is something extraordinary.
