    Sure... and it's blatantly obvious that no one agrees on what connotation they have in this context - or this thread would be one post long. The problem is that the word DOESN'T have a socially agreed upon connotation in this context.

    Bingo. Without the center tap grounded - any voltage you're reading between anywhere and ground is basically not real.

    ...actually - let me revise that. In unmolested amps - those are the top two causes. In a lot of amps the #1-#100 causes of hum are "work done by previous owner/tech".

    IME - bad/dirty grounds are #1. #2 is bad layout/wiring causing E/B field hum.

    I like both rounds and flats for different basses/uses. ...but rounds with the treble down do not sound like flats. The frequency spectra is significantly different than just "less treble".

    All modern dimmers (post 1970's) work this way - either by PWMing a DC voltage (LED), or chopping the AC waveform using a TRIAC (old school dimmers). No one used resistor/rheostat dimmers. Old school low noise dimmers were miniature variacs, varying the AC voltage to the light bulb.

    Low frequencies have longer wavelengths. Wavelength of the sound wave has no effect on volume at a given distance, unless we're dealing with standing or reflected waves causing wave interference.

    Absolutely. ...and if you are soldering anything with a lot of thermal mass - more tip thermal mass and higher wattage are your friend. An underpowered/tipped soldering iron will ruin things much more quickly due to overheating than just about anything.

    It's perfectly defensible to use the term art to refer to any skilled craft - as that is the origin of the word. Personally - I don't see plumbers as artists, even though they certainly qualify under the origins of the word.

    There can be. Price is merely the cost to obtain something. It my be higher or lower than the value to an individual. ...but there is no inherent, objective value. Something's value is exactly what one believes it to be.
