Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

I would say the Perps maybe are a little easier to bow than Spirocore weichs but I think the real difference is the the perps are noticeably less “scratchy” sounding. Especially on the G.

Double Bass Lightest folding music stand

Peak music stands. Mostly made of plastic. I’ve had mine for about 5 years and keep it in my car year round and it’s still in great shape, even with getting used a few times a week typically. Plus I can set it up and tear it down in like 30 seconds.

I could use some help for my first gig next saturday...

I would check and make sure your bass is properly shielded. Copper tape or shielding paint. Both the pickup and control cavities, and make sure there’s a ground link between the two. Any decent tech can do this for fairly quickly. You can even shield the inside of your pickup cover as long as...

Double Bass Pirastro Perpetuals or other nickel free modern string for SLB300 anyone?

I’m planning on putting the 2/yo set of perpetuals currently on my upright onto my SLB200 in the next couple months. I’ve really enjoyed playing them, especially feel-wise and have every expectation that they’ll work great on the Yamaha.

    Leaving Precision neck unmounted?

I worked on a 60s strat earlier this year that had been left without strings on for years (they weren’t sure how long exactly but 10-20) and it had a bad backbow that rendered it unplayable without extensive work which the owner declined to do. I would definitely slack the truss rod it it’s not...

I have hum, but it’s not 60 cycle hum or due to a grounding issue…

Are your electronics well shielded? I’ve fixed a couple guitars that had mystery humming with a judicious application of copper tape. Edit: I just realized you said all your instruments. It’d be weird if they were ALL improperly shielded I suppose.

Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

I’m at about a year and a half with my set. They settled in very quickly and I haven’t noticed them dying at all really. They’re sounding great with my bluegrass band and I’m usually happy with them in my jazz band although lately I have found myself wanting a little more high mids to help cut...

Best Bass Amp Modeling OR Can No Amp Gigging Ever Feel Right?

I recently got a Darkglass Element that I’m actually super impressed by. I didn’t want to go the whole multi fx pedal route and the Element is pretty simple as far as getting a great sounding cab sim right out of the box without having to dive in and do a lot of tweaking. Although it does have a...

Double Bass Incredibly prone to tendinitis

I’ve had really excellent results lately using the new pirastro perpetuals. I’ve dealt with tendinitis for the last 6 years or so and I usually have very tight forearms after a few days in a town of gigs or rehearsals. I’ve had the perps on for a little over 2 months now and I’ve seen a dramatic...

Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

I’ve got them at a comfortable height right now. Much higher and I can’t execute ideas with my left hand as well as I’d like. All of my gigs are amplified so I don’t really need the extra acoustic volume anyway. Some of the punch that I’m missing is just missing the front end of the notes that I...

Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

So I put a new set of perps on my bass (fully carved 2013 Wilfur) about 2 months ago, replacing a set of Zyex lights that I’d had on there for the last 2 years or so. In the past I’ve also used helicore hybrid lights (which I absolutely hated on my bass) and Spiro mitts. The first thing I’ll say...

Double Bass Open string starts flat, then comes up to pitch

My bass had a similar problem with the open G recently. I took it in to have a new pickup fitted and have a small crack repaired. My luthier reset the bridge and I haven’t had a problem with it since.

Double Bass Why? Is it playable?

One of my teachers used to own a 7 string electric upright mad by Conklin I think. He told me they only ever made 3 of them. This was the only pic I could find of it though.

New build. How to make a bass guitar that sounds like an upright

Keep in mind that the first recording is a more modern bass sound with steel strings and low-ish action, and the the second recording is much older using gut strings and higher action. Even in the upright world you’re not going to be able to replicate that sound with most modern setups. If you...
