Double Bass Lightest folding music stand

For light and compact, [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. It's fairly solid, mostly metal, and it will do for indoor stages where there is no wind. For outdoor stages where wind can be an issue, we prefer our heavier, not compact, pain-to-schlep double-shelf sheet metal music stand that we got years ago (for which I've modified the stand part so it's even more secure).

We don't use a lot of music in jams, but when we're on stage my wife the lead singer likes to have a set list and lyric notes if at all possible. So I carry this light and compact music stand along with my K&M DB stand and a light and compact mic stand (Airturn GoStand) in the recently available, very generous black and green K&M zipper bag made for their DB stand. The three stands fit together very nicely.

I use a Petersen. It's mostly plastic (legs are metal) and has a pretty shallow shelf. I'm not sure how stable it is outdoors in wind, definitely not as stable as an old school Manhassett! It'll hold a Real Book, a fat binder, an iPad, etc. It has extenders to display wide multipage sheets. Pop off the legs, collapse the pole, remove the shelf, loosen the two tilt adjust wheels and it becomes it's own case (see pic, on the right of the legs). In the carry bag with shoulder strap holding some clothespins, a Mighty Brite light and some pencils in the accessory pouch, it's just under 3 pounds on my bathroom scale. $40 at Musician's Friend and other online vendors.

It depends on what you want to put on it. I’ve been using this one

for jams and general use. It’s sturdy and easy to assemble. Best of all the shelf will hold a Real Book with no problem. I have a Peterson as mentioned above and it’s a clever bit of compact design but the shelf tends to fold up with a load. The wire stands work fine if you only have a few sheets of music. I also have a stand that just holds my iPad. I like this on stage as it’s less obtrusive. At home I use the standard Manhassett stand.

Light can be tippy. I’ve given up on stands and do everything with forScore on my iPad. I resisted for a long time but I found I was having a hard time keeping track of all the different bands score and lead sheets. Most everyone I play with does the same and it makes life incredibly easy and organized. All my set list from gigs past are now easily accessed not to mention thousands of standards with changeable keys from the music apps I use. If I happen to get a new score I scan it with my phone or iPad and it goes directly into my library. Incredibly useful and the folding iPad stand weighs almost nothing.

iPad with ForScore; oh yeah, I’m a believer! I held out for a long time but a gig where I was in the house band backing several artists necessitated I take the plunge. Been using it ever since.

Regarding the original post, I use one of those Donner music stands, even with the iPad. Gives me a little flexibility in case someone brings in an actual chart.
