    Definitely this. I'm not going to say the hardware doesn't matter, but even if you have a really great looper (the Boss RC50 is one I have been eyeing for years, along with the EHX mentioned above) you still have to have great timing and an ability to play a bar while thinking 2-4 bars ahead.
