The Official Sterling by Music Man Owners Club

Play before you buy but if it sounds good it's probably a good deal. A sterling should complement a ray (or in this case a SBMM Ray) pretty well.

    A safe 'all rounder?'

I would probably go with a MM stingray 4 or 5 HH model. But if not that I'd get a nice precision.

What are you eyeing for your next purchase?

Probably a Matt Freeman signature precision or a gk mb115 + short stack

    Bass Guitar On a Budget

Also forgot to ask, what did you play before? If you like what you had or have a specific sound you like, it can help narrow a search. That being said, precisions are a pretty universal sound that can fit into almost any genre so it's a a good starting point.

    Bass Guitar On a Budget

Certainly used Fender P MiM can be good. I've played several from friends and local shops and I've loved them great playability and sound awesome. I'm not sure if you can but it may be possible to get a used SBMM bass for that budget (definitely pushing it to the upper limits though) and those...

    Guitarist selecting first Bass

I'd personally wouldn't recommend short scale as I feel you will benefit more from learning the full scale of bass all at once. Stepping into as full scale bass may not be easy initially, difficulty offset by slimmer necks and bodies, but I would not recommend limiting yourself to short scale...

NAMM Preview - Sterling By Music Man Basses

I'm a more than a little disappointed in myself for not waiting another 5 months just to get a ray in that silver color or trans white

    Guitarist selecting first Bass

Welcome to the deep end. When starting out the most common advice (and the best in my opinion) you'll get here is to try EVERYTHING you can get your hands on and find out what feels right to you. People play all kinds of basses from any number of manufacturers. So it's up to you to decide what...

Dumb, purely aesthetics poll: Bread and butter Precision: White or red?

If it's between Red or Oly White for a P then I'd go with the white. That Reddish Orange (or is it Orange Red?) doesn't fit that classic simple P bass look that I always envision in my mind when I think of precisions. It's not a bad color, just not something I traditionally associate with that...

Pretty sure I've gotten a few kits as a gift and had some odd colors around like pink and neon green
