Play before you buy but if it sounds good it's probably a good deal. A sterling should complement a ray (or in this case a SBMM Ray) pretty well.

Also forgot to ask, what did you play before? If you like what you had or have a specific sound you like, it can help narrow a search. That being said, precisions are a pretty universal sound that can fit into almost any genre so it's a a good starting point.

I'd personally wouldn't recommend short scale as I feel you will benefit more from learning the full scale of bass all at once. Stepping into as full scale bass may not be easy initially, difficulty offset by slimmer necks and bodies, but I would not recommend limiting yourself to short scale...

If it's between Red or Oly White for a P then I'd go with the white. That Reddish Orange (or is it Orange Red?) doesn't fit that classic simple P bass look that I always envision in my mind when I think of precisions. It's not a bad color, just not something I traditionally associate with that...
