First Build-medium scale PJ/bass vi hybrid 4 string

I forgot to add that after cutting the body, I weighed it and was very surprised to see that it was a little over 3.5 pounds. With the shorter scale and lightweight tuners, this is going to turn out to be a very light bass. :hyper:

First Build-medium scale PJ/bass vi hybrid 4 string

I joined and ripped the sides of my board flat, cross cut it into two sections and glued them to make a body blank. After clamping for 24 hours, I planed the body blank down to 1-3/8''. I forgot to take pictures of those steps but here is my design printed on paper, laid out on the body...

First Build-medium scale PJ/bass vi hybrid 4 string

Hi everybody, I have built a saga kit bass before but I am attempting my first real build by making a body for a Warmoth neck. This is my design: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] It is based on the Fender Bass VI shape with a different pickguard and slightly smaller, more...

32 inch scale Monarch/Birdsong style first build

Thanks for the heads up guys. I have revised the design a little bit. I am having a hard time drawing a nicer headstock shape on CAD so I will probably try doing that by hand. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Oh, I get it now, thanks. Though, I'm not sure how that would work with my...

    CAD Software

If you are a mac user, the Rhino tutorials by TB user Beauchene Implements are great. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f57/tutorial-cad-cam-luthiery-954348/ I used them to learn how to design my current build. It did take many hours of practice to really understand how the process works though.

32 inch scale Monarch/Birdsong style first build

Thank you ctmullins! It's encouraging to have a great builder like you following my thread. I'm not sure I was totally clear when I referred to the comfort of a set neck. What I meant was with a joint like luthiers such as Fodera and Carl Thompson use, there is no actual heel to get in the...

32 inch scale Monarch/Birdsong style first build

Hi all, I have been lurking on LC for months but haven't been active on the forum for the past couple of years. I have learned a lot from both professional and amateur builders on here and have finally decided to attempt my own build. I have a decent amount of woodworking experience and will...

Under the pickguard of a J bass

Yes I also like the way the screw holes look. I also like how the sunburst finishes don't have any red under the pickguard. The point is, you don't have to play with the pickguard off but even taking it off for the hell of it and seeing those routes gives an impression of low quality IMO. It's...

Under the pickguard of a J bass

I remember reading on TB that these holes are for identifying the bodies not for the CNC machine unlike popular belief. Almost every other factory making J syle bodies seem to be doing fine (including the one where they make Squiers). I sincerely wish Fender would give a damn about customers'...

Under the pickguard of a J bass

IMO it's one thing to know a Fender Jazz, another to think of it as the "must have" bass (for most beginners anyway). Besides, there's a reason why non-muso people ask if you have a Fender. It's the same reason why when you say guitar, they automatically conjure up an image of a strat or les paul.

Under the pickguard of a J bass

Given that Jaco gave the Fender jazz as much publicity as almost everyone else put together and did so with a pickguard-less jazz, I find it very disappointing that Fender doesn't allow us to chose not to have the pickguard on. Especially when their $1000+ MIA standard line has cost cutting...

Under the pickguard of a J bass

How about the '75 RI models ? Does anybody know about those ?

Under the pickguard of a J bass

I got this reply from Fender when I asked them about the routes: "Any J bass model with a pickguard will have routing holes for the wires underneath the pickguard except the victor Bailey Bass and the Jaco signature bass. Also take a look at the Frank Bello model." Surely this isn't right is...

Under the pickguard of a J bass

Would you mind posting a photo if it's not too much trouble ? I'm curious as to what that looks like

Under the pickguard of a J bass

I think it would be sort of acceptable on a Squier or MIM standard but on a MIA bass that cost that much, It's very dissapointing. Not that it matters if you use the pickguard but the holes and especially the big ugly route gives me the impression of low quality and cut corners. As a big Fender...
