Tips to avoid becoming an "I used to play bass" dad

There are a lot of folks who start their TalkBass tenure with "Hey uh I used to play, then I had a family, now the kids are grown up and what the hay I thought I'd give this another shot." I'm on my way to writing one of those posts in twenty years. Working overtime in retail, finally got a...

    BB435 vs. BB735a

Sounds like the 735A offers solutions you don't care about. For me, 735 was the obvious choice, so I got one and I love it. Great bass that I highly recommend and I'd be less happy with the 435. But it sounds like the obvious choice for you is the 435, so hey, save money and get the right bass...

    Sire Bass Club!

Was that recent? I'm about to order a pickguard from them (just got my V5 yesterday!) but they haven't responded to a message from me, and their website and facebook pages have been silent for about a year, so I'm sort of nervous they may have shut down.

What is the most appropriately rated bass in your opinion?

For the sake of what I think could actually be a fun discussion, I'll put in Yamaha as a brand. General consensus is that any instrument from them will work well, be reliable, weigh a little extra, and not be particularly sexy. I've found that to be accurate.

Google Gemini AI helps visualize basses with color, pickguard options etc!

I love this sort of tool! Gotta reign yourself in, though. Things can get crazy fast

How do you search for info on playing jazz on a bass, without just getting Jazz bass results?

... I feel some indignation that this worked for you. But also gratitude.

How do you search for info on playing jazz on a bass, without just getting Jazz bass results?

There's my trouble, I like certain jazz a lot, but I know I'm not into it enough to get deep and learn all the things. I'm not sure there's even such a thing as basic jazz for people who just kinda want to play it once in a while, but one always hopes. So once in a while, I search for basic...

How do you search for info on playing jazz on a bass, without just getting Jazz bass results?

One of several reasons I don't learn to play jazz is that I don't know how to start exploring it. Whether on Talkbass, a search engine, youtube or otherwise, using the terms 'jazz' and 'bass' in a query will get you loads of results, but not the results we're looking for just now. What terms...

Speakers...Why Does The Myth that Size Matters, Still Exist?

"Acoustic basses will never work! They're just not big enough, you need a bigger surface to produce those frequencies! You can't deny the physics, ya stubborn morons!" "Speaker size has nothing to do with anything, it's all in how it was designed, ya stubborn morons!" I suppose the truth lies...

Help me sort through this GAS (p with rounds, j with flats???)

Both excellent, but fairly different to my ear. The Yamaha leans more into "authoritative" whereas the Sire, if you ask me, is in fact the best bass for metal. You know, I've been meaning to try that and I keep forgetting. Did it years ago and really liked it, but I had no real idea what I was...

Help me sort through this GAS (p with rounds, j with flats???)

Let's see if I can keep this in a reasonably small nutshell. I'm a roundwounds guy. 5 strings are non-negotiable. And there's no tone in the world more authoritative, more rock & roll, more monstrous to my ear than a P-style with rounds. The tone I have in mind there is captured perfectly in my...

I would like to know your opinions and personal experience with 5 string PJ basses . Looking for one …

Ibanez are cool, but if you're a little tired of choosing them before you've even gotten your new instrument, sounds like you might as well branch out. Schecters give me more of a "Whoa.... now that's a solid instrument..." feel when I pick them up than anything else I've touched. Not...

    Bass in a Worship Group

My take: if your goal is more to fit the genre, there are standards and general rules for how you should sound and what you should play. In a lot of ways, that's right and good. People expect it, they can easily follow it, the band will know how to work with what you're doing. It can create a...
