Taking Bass Lessons From a Guitarist?

Yeah, you've all convinced me...already have my eyes on a few, and they're pure bassists. Very annoying that this guy was/is going around specifically seeking out bass students when he's exclusively a guitarist. But it's my fault for not checking out his background more carefully. Now I know...

Taking Bass Lessons From a Guitarist?

Don't yell at me, lol...he was the one advertising himself as a bass teacher.

Taking Bass Lessons From a Guitarist?

So I've taken my third lesson with an instructor, but the more I look into his credentials, the more it looks like he's primarily a guitarist (in his bio, there's actually no mention of him playing bass). He does seem to play the bass pretty well, at least to my untrained ears, when he...

    Pacman's sure-fire scale practice method

Even with my limited theory knowledge, this makes intuitive sense. I'm adding this to my practice routine. Thanks

Has your brain changed with music?

Really? How long have you been playing? For me, I'm already noticing I can multitask a LITTLE better than before. Learning a new instrument means learning a hell of a lot of multitasking, at least for my OCD mind! :bassist:

So being a bass player is now a psychiatric disorder?

I thought drummers were known as "the crazy ones". But then, bass is a rhythm instrument, so it's half like drums. In short, bass = half crazy = bipolar.

What am I doing wrong? Ad/Craigslist etiquette help!

Blunt feedback: Your pictures, all posed and only of you (even though you're the only band member, this is just an impression), you might come off as a bit diva-ish and spotlight hogging. Reading the ad, it's obviously not your intention, but I'm just rattling off the first thing...

The fingers are at it again!

Of course - like I said, I like all the tips I got, and they helped me out tonight. Practice is the way, I just wanted to be sure I was practicing the proper way so I don't end up with unbreakable habits at such a fundamental, basic level, that I end up doomed. Muscle memory is like an...

    floating thumb techniqe

Huh...my instructor told me not to use the floating thumb technique, since I'm a beginner. I personally find it way more natural feeling, but he knows better than I do. *shrug*

    Your Myers-Briggs Personality Type?

I'm noticing a predominance of S (as opposed to N). S is "sensing", and bass is all about the senses! Sheeyit. I'm wired wrong. :hiding:

The fingers are at it again!

Awesome ideas everyone, can't wait to get home from work and try these out. @Mark Perry - 1FPF works perfectly for me on frets 5 and up. @Febs - Thumb behind neck, I try to keep it behind my middle finger, but sometimes it wants to go behind my index finger. Lol, obsessive Type A...

Famous bassists who started really late (age 20+)

Exactly, I don't want to be famous - just competent to creatively express myself through music, even in front of people. :)

    Your Myers-Briggs Personality Type?

You may have had to take one of these personality tests during college/career advising/work. If not, here's a quick, free test: http://similarminds.com/jung_word_pair.html I somehow suspect the bassist population would have plenty of Introverts (as opposed to Extroverts) and Judgers (as...

    Frequency/Duration of Practice?

What do you find is the optimal amount/frequency of practice, particularly when you were a beginner? I've been practicing daily, 20-30 minutes at a time. I do it right before bed, and I sleep maybe 2-3 hours a night (I don't need much sleep), so I could potentially go much longer than...
