Lowpass filters - like the Alembic - need LOW impedance pickups (like original Stingray PUs) providing a very high resonance frequency. The filter can just CUT below the resonance frequency but cannot add any tonal information above this. So most of the standard pickups are not really suitable...

"VTC" is a nice word for a simple concentric pot and simple push/pull pot with 2 added capacitors. My recommendation: build it by yourself - costs are ~ 50 €/$ with high quality pots - "schematics" of the VTC is a really simple one.....

In a "normal" (not perfect) Jazz Bass circuit the tone pot is behind the two volume pots. But it's crucial that the tone pot is BEFORE the preamp/buffer as it interacts with the pickup
