Double Bass Need more volume on stage

I currently play my DB thru a Phil Jones Super Flightcase combo stacked on a PJB PB300 powered cab. I really like the sound I get out of it. But when I play with a full band with drums and electric guitars it doesn’t seem to cut through volume wise. I end up trying sometimes to turn the volume...

Double Bass Repertoire For duo w/piano and bowed bass

I was thinking about getting with a piano player (and possibly guitar to make it a trio) to build up a repertoire of solo bowed bass pieces with piano/guitar accompaniment for wedding cocktail hours and other types of laid back gigs. Does anyone have any suggestions for this type of thing? Was...

Double Bass How did you conquer stage fright?

If I'm ever in a new and unfamiliar situation with my bass, I try to focus on what I know works with my current skill level. And then later on in the night I end up getting comfortable enough to go beyond my 'safe zone' because at that point I now have a good feel for the situation at hand. I...

    Double Bass "Play me somethin"

Let's say you're setting up for a gig, or you're anywhere else where your DB is present, and someone comes up to you and asks you if it's a cello, then after you politely tell him its a bass he asks you to 'just play me a little somethin.' What do y'all usually do in this situation? Do you play...

Double Bass Thought process on creating lines/solos.

I need and want to start transcribing solos from some of those players. Thanks for the inspiration everyone! Although in school they'd always encouraged us to transcribe solos from other instrumentalists, i have never sat down and tried to do it, always forgot it as an option i guess. But im at...

Double Bass Thought process on creating lines/solos.

Yeah, i guess what are interesting note choices? Its mostly about how the notes are played with the right and left hands together to really give the notes a voice. Its not always necessary to try and play other chord tones when the basic 1 3 5 could really hold it down. I like all the feedback...

Double Bass Thought process on creating lines/solos.

I like to try different thought processes from gig to gig to see what gels best in my own head. You're right Michael, the more in depth you get on your own time means more performing and less thinking (possibly stressing) while on the job.

Double Bass Thought process on creating lines/solos.

Just wondering what people think about when they're creating bass lines/solos and trying to find interesting note choices. Do you think in terms of modes, shapes, scales, or do you just primarily use your ear. Just curious to see what other people think! ✌
