I'd agree, learning as many Paul McCartney bass lines as you can will give you a really good perspective on the matter. And learn as many other tunes with good melodic bass lines (that you really like) as you can. That'll train your ears, stretch your technique, and give you the musical breadth...

Perhaps lowering the pickups a bit? Are you sure that the sound is from the strings hitting the pickups? Anyhow, I'd try lowering those down first.

I've done a lot of solo stuff with just the upright and vocal. People actually seem to enjoy it a good deal...maybe it's just the novelty of it.
