No, it's silver, then copper. Gold is third, then aluminium. Gold is used (as a thin coating) on contacts because it doesn't tarnish.

When playing my MM Stingray I can always hear myself better, on stage, than with my other (P + PJ) basses. How they sound out front is down to the person mixing.

I'll take a $1000 bass player on a $100 bass over the opposite, any day.

Are we talking 'bedroom tone' or live tone? Great bedroom tone rarely survives in live situations. In a live situation I plug my AS P bass into a wide variety of amps (shared stages, shared bass rigs) and it rarely sounds anything but great to awesome. It just works.

My Ric 4003 had a similar sticky neck. Got sticky after 20-30 mins of playing. I fixed it in two stages. First clean the neck with a clean wet sponge with a drop of washing up liquid. Give it a good old scrub. Rinse. Dry off with a cotton towel. Second, use Virtuoso Guitar Polish - rub in allow...
