Is It Really Too Much to Ask?

Man, you Fender fanboys are too much. Ok, uncle! I give! Fender is omniscient and can do no wrong. I will obey and accept whatever I am given.

ps: Orwell was right.

I'm out.

It has nothing to do with my opinion of Fender. It's called business. As has been said numerous times, if there were enough buyers for this to net net money, I'm sure they would do it. The fact that they used to, but no longer does, and the fact that only smaller companies do, shows there isn't enough of a market.

Same reason GM eliminated Oldsmobile and Pontiac.

Now you're just getting silly - have you been drinking?

Yeah really, his argument makes very little sense. Clearly fender has no problem satisfying the majority of bass players.

Some people are just clueless when it comes to understanding how businesses operate.

again I realize people don't want to read over 300 responses but I did...I have...long story short boiled down to...please contact our custom shop
Sorry; but confess I didn’t read the whole thread.

Regarding your OP: Fender actually has made P Basses with the “A” neck and without the Jazz pickup. Mainly back in the 70’s. There is some discussion of it here.

Fender Precision "A Neck", "B Neck", "C Neck" specifics

My first real bass was a ‘71 P Bass in Olympic White WITH the “A” neck.

Only surviving picture I’ve got. Apologies.

So, they are out there.

As far as Fender goes; I have used them as primary basses for the past three decades. But, I would give the company about a C- for customer interface. They tend to be arrogant, uncommunicative, condescending bordering on belligerent; etc etc. I generally like the instruments in spite of their worst efforts. They absolutely miss a massive number of opportunities with bass players, due to this intransigence.

At one time while living in PHX, I obtained a phone number for one of the staff in the Custom Shop in Scottsdale. I called them to ask about a custom 5 string build using the taper on the Marcus Miller V; which IME is pretty nearly the perfect 5 string Jazz neck taper.

I was told, (not necessarily in this order):
A) Absolutely zero chance they they would ever in a zillion years use a spec from a signature model on anything else. (Never mind the model is discontinued)

B) How DARE I call them directly!?! They DON’T under any circumstances talk to musicians.

C) How did I get the phone number? Someone will pay for that.

D) if you want a Custom Shop Product, drive 2 hours south to Tucson, where one of our designated dealers can take your order for the models we offer. (Anyone see a dichotomy between “Custom Shop” and products offered?)

And, to add to my final interaction with Fender, we ultimately relocated to Tucson, and I did go in to their dealer Rainbow Guitars; where after being told to wait for the bass guy who would “be right out,” I left after 1 1/2 hours of waiting around their “showroom.” LOL

We have rattlesnakes down here in AZ; and as the saying goes, “when the snake bites you once, it’s the snake’s fault; the second time, it’s your fault.

So, these days, I just watch Fender from a safe distance. I’ve also gotten quite comfortable buying Fender parts and putting together parts basses that meet my needs. I like my Fender (parts) Basses very much. The actual company is whole ‘nother enchilada.

Dear Fender,

I would like a Precision Bass with a Jazz Neck to be a Standard offering

Is that really too much to ask?

Signed,

Frustrated Bass Player...

P.S.

And if I had my way it would be a 3 color burst "P" Bass - with a Jazz Neck!! (No Pesky Jazz Pup Along For The Ride)

Like the bass pictured above...but with a "Jazz" width nut (Bound and Blocked would be nice too but I'm not super picky...just a Jazz width nut would suffice)

Seriously Every Fender I own has been modified by me because they don't make what I want "off the shelf"....I have never been able to buy an "off the shelf" Fender that I didn't have to modify in some way

I have a 69 P what came with a Jazz neck. Replaced the neck with a 72 P neck. Much better now.

I've seen several P-Bass's with 1-1/2" nuts (J-Bass dimension) offered by Fender over the years, but never seen a J-Bass with a 1-3/4" nut (P-Bass dimension). You have to buy both, swap the necks, then sell the unwanted one! I was lucky enough to obtain NOS genuine Fender replacement parts from the 80's including a P-Bass neck and J-Bass body to build what I wanted.

been doing this for 35 years probably won't ever stop...but it would be nice for ONCE...to be able to walk into a store and go oh wow...exactly what I was looking for...

Ha. Hahaha. I've been playing as long as you, and this is why I go custom. Fortunately I have the resources to own Fender-style customs by Sadowsky, Nordstrand, Benavente. Even if I didn't, I would happily go with a parts company such as Warmoth. A buddy of mine has had Warmoth build him a few basses and they are all great... and were reasonably priced.

Companies like Fender couldn't stay in business if they tried to please everyone*. Even if they did, no store could possibly carry all the different combinations/permutations.

*Fender Custom Shop will do whatever you want, but I assume that's not an option for the obvious rea$on$.

Yup, believe it or not, there will be some that would have a heart attack if their "P" ain't a "C"

If Fender don't sell something that caters to your needs, either customise one so it does, or buy something else. Your frustration seems pretty easily remedied to me :)
I agree. When I wanted get a Jazz fretless (no lines) on the neck and with a Jazz body. there was nothing in the Fender lines at the time. I used to piece mine together. Fender is a great product because you can mix and match;)
