Is It Really Too Much to Ask?

G&L LB-100 can be ordered with a 1.5 neck. Sure it's not a "Fender," but it is a "Leo."

An LB-100 can be ordered in the finish you want, and even with the blocks/binding you want, and it's far less than a custom shop "Fender."

I know this has been mentioned before but I think it will be the closest you can get to a "Fender" P-Bass with Jazz neck, that is factory built, and not a custom shop.

I realize people don't want to readd al 17 pages....but

I already own a G&L with a jazz neck, and several Laklands as well set up this way

I also own Fenders set up this way that I built for myself...My humble opinion is that it should be an available off the shelf option as they already make the necessary parts...

new wrinkle...!

New Fender Study Shows That Women Account for Half of Emerging Guitar Market

now I wonder how long it will take for these new female players to demand smaller necks on a P bass?
I posted this idea on a sire thread a year-and-a-half back and got absolutely flamed to no end for suggesting that they were making bases with a 1.5 nut with because of women and children.

It was when sire came out with their new P bass line.

Bobby Vega, Carl Radle, and Duck Dunn are three players that spring to mind when I think about P basses with Jazz necks...In my circles on the local music scene I see lots of players with this mod (as well as reversed headstocks) not to mention I own and operate a small repair shop and recording studio and, on average do this mod for customers about 6 to 8 times a year, so I know there are players who would appreciate this being a standard option especially in the low to median price range! (Squier and MIM)

Still I think this Mod (and a few others) would fit nicely in Fender's Parallel Universe Line-up

for some reason comments like this continue to bug me...

Fender already manufactures three different Nut Widths with the "Precision" Moniker on the headstock

1. 1.62"
2. 1.75"
3. 1.5" (these are found on the 70's P/J specials and are currently what all of my "P" basses are wearing...I suspect they are simply a Jazz Neck with a Precision Decal, but as I don't work for Fender I have no idea)

again...

I'm not asking for a custom nut width, I'm not asking for custom scale length, I'm not asking for a custom color, and I'm not not asking for a custom wiring harness, I'm nit asking for custom pick-ups, or even a custom guard...all of the available parts needed are currently manufactured across every price point in every product line Fender currently makes...nothing custom at all

so how is what I'm asking for a custom spec?

For the love of mike I just want them to bolt a Jazz neck to a precision body...is that really too much to ask?

A few years ago this would have fit nicely in their "Pawn Shop" line

Today it would go nicely as part of their "Parallel Universe" line along with Jazz basses with Precision necks and both P and J basses with reverse headstocks!!!

Sure, and that's pretty much how the Custom Shop works - piece together components off the existing menu of Fender offerings. They're not generally carving whole new shapes from raw wood.

I have a "Duck Dunn" FrankenFender P myself. It's a common enough mod. Maybe there would be a market for them if they mass-produced them. I don't know, I'm not a marketing person. If Fender did one at an affordable price, I'd be interested.

But it is still a fact, watching TB's boards over the years, that there are, on the one hand, lots of bassists saying "Why doesn't Fender make X" and list what they want in a bass as something Fender should mass-produce; and on the other hand, lots of bassists saying, "Why does Fender have to make a dozen different flavors of P bass? Why not just make a plain old P and a J and be done?"

And, as this thread shows, there are lots of other companies that DO make what you want, at reasonable prices with good quality. But for some reason, it has to have a Fender logo on it.

A while back, Squier ran an Eva Gardner signature model for, I think $399 (Gardner was Pink's bassist). It was, in fact, precisely what you're asking for, P with J neck, affordable and all, and I don't think I ever saw a negative review of it. But it doesn't seem to have made a ripple in sales and was discontinued. If they couldn't mass-sell a model at $399, maybe they concluded they weren't going to mass-sell one at $799 either. I don't know.

I wonder if it's too much to ask to get a Jazz bass with a Precision shaped body, other than those old 'Precision Bass' five string Squiers with two Jazz pickups? I'm not a five string player. I like jazz basses but the body shape is annoying on stands. I'm toying with the idea of getting a PJ body, a new scratch plate cut and transferring over bits from by parts bass. But then I might also throw a couple of MMs in instead.

Maybe all these new women bass players will not be so stuck on having the Fender name their headstock that they will simply shop for a bass that suits them.

Demanding that Fender do anything is an asinine concept.

But go ahead and carry on with your whining for another 10 pages...

For me the factor is front to back dimensions, not width. I'm OK with a P width provided the neck feels like it should be on a bass and not in the hands of someone from the Red Sox.

If I had small hands I'd be looking for a shorter scale like the SS Jaguars.

But then I don't see what the problem with getting a PJ and never using the J is. I rarely use the bridge J pickup, although it's nice to have occasionally or as a thumb rest, but it's the price of entry for the Jazz neck.

Now I do wish most PJ didn't have an edge jack...

And I own several of those basses (Lakland and G&L)

The Eva Gardner bass probably would have sold much better minus the tramp stamp of the clipper ship and he weird inlay on the 12 fret

whining implies my pro J Neck P bass arguments are feeble or petulant....which they are not....I'm simply trying to engage in a discussion about why they are not a standard offering

While most people just wanna type buy something else

also it's not like I'm marching up and down with a sign in front of the factory demanding anything....

also your free to NOT read he next 10 pages...

This thread feels like a slightly more grown-up version of taking my 4 year-old to the froyo place.
him: "I don't want the gummi worms. I want the BEARS."
me: "Yeah they only have the worms here."
him: "But the worms are too big. I don't like them."
me: "Well you don't have to get them."
him: "But I still want the BEARS."
me: "... I guess you're going to have to deal with it."

The difference being that if I brought bears from home and did an "after market swap" he would be 100% cool with it. I can understand wanting something to be a certain way and feeling like that way should be easily available. But I also understand a company like Fender limiting themselves to a certain set of options and refraining from trying to solve problems which only exist for a very small subset of consumers.

there is also a third option in which the worms could be chopped into smaller easy to eat pieces....

I have been doing the aftermarket swap for 35 years...and I'm cool with it...

but the fact that I have been doing the aftermarket swap not just for me, but also my customers...then you add in that a certain percentage of professionals that are also doing the aftermarket swap, got me to thinking that there is obviously a market for this mod (evidenced by the fact that companies other than Fender are doing it because Fender doesn't)

add to the fact that I'm about to turn 50 and suddenly I wan't a sunburst P bass in celebration with my favored configuration...led to this thread

again I realize people don't want to read over 300 responses but I did...I have...long story short boiled down to...please contact our custom shop

Right, because for Fender, no matter how much complaining you do, this is a custom shop bass. I for one would be very happy if they never made another sunburst bass ever again. But, I don’t see that happening and it seems like I might be in the minority, so it just isn’t worth my time. Luckily, Fender gives me other options to get what I want. Same for you.

You've also been given a variety of great reasons why they won't offer it and you chose to ignore those reasons.
