Is It Really Too Much to Ask?

Dear Fender,

I would like a Precision Bass with a Jazz Neck to be a Standard offering

Is that really too much to ask?

P.S.

And if I had my way it would be a 3 color burst "P" Bass - with a Jazz Neck!! (No Pesky Jazz Pup Along For The Ride)

Like the bass pictured above...but with a "Jazz" width nut (Bound and Blocked would be nice too but I'm not super picky...just a Jazz width nut would suffice)

Seriously Every Fender I own has been modified by me because they don't make what I want "off the shelf"....I have never been able to buy an "off the shelf" Fender that I didn't have to modify in some way
I'm just the opposite but like you I wonder why it is IMPOSSIBLE to buy a Fender Jazz Bass with a wide Precision neck! I would gladly purchase the 1.75 nutwidth Precision neck I want, but Fender won't sell just a neck! This is crazy poopie and Fender needs to change this policy one way or the other!

Fender Standard Series Precision Bass Neck - Pau Ferro Fingerboard

If it's the wrong nut width for you, they've got a bunch more at various price points.

So Fender doesn't offer an off the shelf solution to either of our bass problems: you want a Precision with a Jazz neck, and I want a Jazz with a Precision neck. And even though it wouldn't solve our problems, we both could effect a positive outcome if Fender would even just allow us to buy the necks that we seek. So Fender is the roadblock either we you look at it! And before some wise guy starts with the Warmoth or some other maker of Fender type parts, in my case, these places don't even offer a Precision neck with 1.75 nutwidth! This was the neck on the iconic '57 Precision bass. It was the neck on the '68 Telecaster...and you can't find one anywhere!

A P with a J neck.........off the shelf. Something I’ve always dreamed of. I did come close, I think it was a California series, serial was prefixed AMXN, was 3-tone sunburst, gold anodised pickguard, but again, that J pickup at the bridge, it may have had actives in it too. Was $790 AU at the local pawnshop but by the time I’d researched the serial someone had bought it.
Oh well,

I actually have a 1976 Lake Placid Blue P-Bass that I was able to do a special order to have a Jazz neck put on it from the factory. And it wasn’t a custom shop order either. At least the bass has none of the typical C-shop type of neck plate or other identifications on it. It was a very nice neck too with the white binding and the Pearl Inlays of the period. I am far from an expert on the history on Fenders and what they did through the years with P Bassses, but I do know they had about a 2 yr. period around then that they experimented with doing special orders for that. My local Fender Music Dealer was the one who informed me of that. I wish I would’ve ordered a couple more of them because they are super rare. They obviously broke with doing that afterwards—why?—is sure beyond me because I agree with you that it is just totally cool. I remember it was a costly option bringing the total order to about $700 which was a lot back then. I’ve been considering actually selling it now as I’m on a fixed income and have a bunch of other musical needs.

Yes, p bass/ jazz neck sounds great. It seems they should do more of that.

HOWEVER. I figured out it's really the original 1 3/4 inch p bass necks I don't think I can get used to. The modern 1 5/8 inch nut p bass necks are close enough to the jazz necks (1.5"). The narrower p necks are on the American professional and Player series. Also the Nate Mendel p bass.

To my knowledge, Fender Custom Shop didn't exist back then, nor did they ever put a bound and blocked neck on a P Bass back then, either...

I have a sunburst Fender P bass with a jazz neck. It is a 2016 “Magnificent Seven” model. It has a P/J configuration and a rosewood fingerboard. Fender only made 500 of these, so clearly they don’t want this to be a standard offering. It is for sale if you are interested....

He specificall said he didn't want a j pup on it.

Well if fender can't make a bass string with the correct winding length for a (fender) p bass (E string), you know so the thick portion of the string doesn't rap the tuning peg..... Don't have much hope

What are you babbling about? - To my knowledge, Fender bass strings are about the only ones that haven't adopted the longer winding length that doesn't work well with their basses...

The Fender Mod Shop should offer an A neck on a P. That would make the most sense, as in being the most economical way to offer it without a production run.

Yep, I don’t get it. I keep checking the Mod Shop every once in a while. This seems like a simple option.

Look for a late 1990’s or early 2000’s Peavey Fury. It has great P-bass tone with a very thin and narrow neck.
Tone w/mute and Chromes.
Chromes with a pick
I just think is a pretty nice groove!

Thanks Doc,

I wasn't a fan of Peavey back in the day...and I'm still not in spite of owning a very nice neck-thru Grind

The thread is basically me wishing out loud that Fender had this as an off the shelf available option as opposed to having to build one from parts, or having to buy another brand (Which I have already done and stated many times)

I am frustrated that so many of the responses I got were:

"Build One" (already done that see Fanboy reference)
Buy one from another company (Done that as well, I own G&L and Lakland)
Stop whining and complaining (ad nauseam)

all of which really having nothing to do with the actual topic Of why this isn't an option from Fender

apparently (aside from a few responses actually germane to the topic) it's easier to type a drive by swipe...than for people to actually read and participate in a discussion about why Fender Doesn't offer this as a part of any of their product lines, when other companies do...

I still maintain that a few years ago it would have fit nicely into their pawnshop line and would fit nicely today into their parallel universe line without it having to be built in large numbers...

despite all the arguments against I still can't understand why Fender doesn't offer this option (on any product line) as it has been a popular mod since the 60's as evidenced by such well known players as Duck Dunn, Bobby Vega and Carl Radle just to name a few...
