    Chorus Pedal and Octave Pedal

My 'default' patch on my Zoom B2 [ie: the patch I use all the time, except when I'm using something more drastic] has just a touch each of compression, octave, flange and distortion. The flanger settings are quite subtle, very shallow and slow, similar to a chorus. So I think you're on the right...

    Newbie Question

Slightly besides the topic, but does anyone else find it funny that classical players don't seem to memorise anything? You never see them without a chart. There's hundreds or thousands of tunes I know, including several albums I can play through from memory, 40+ minutes worth of tunage, but you...

    Ibanez SR305DX mod

Good point, but I kinda like the phat tone, and the increased output. 'Course, maybe I'm just used to it, and it'll change with the passive junk removed. The idea, once it's on external power, is to turn it up and leave it. I'll have to see how it sounds with just the phat, but I'll leave enough...

    Ibanez SR305DX mod

I'm an advocate of stripping out onboard volume and tone controls. I don't really use them; The tone and volume are better adjusted with my Zoom B2.1u: my feet are free, and the circuitry is more advanced. Removing the pots takes a load off the pickups and shifts the resonant point of the...

    Playing over bridge pickup

Your sound is your sound; If you like it and it works with the material you're playing, what's the harm? I clank. I clank HARD, right over the bridge PU. I like the attack and the tone of it, but like Lownote38 points out, for smoother passages, a lighter touch closer to the neck completely...

P bass vs J bass, have you switched?

Definitely J. Sold my P decades ago because I found the neck too thick and chunky. Still have my J as a backup, my main bass is now an Ibanez SR 5-string; Fantastically slim necks on the SRs.

    Pick your intro!!!

We have an hour-long pre-show playlist of tunes by artists who inspire us, and then a short video intro asking the crowd to 'rise for an anthem', which changes from show to show. Last show we used Gerry Fried's fight music from Star Trek. We've also used the old Battlestar Galactica theme...

Name a bass that really surprised you?

I've got an old EB-3 copy that I haven't played live in decades, not that I don't want to be seen with it, but I already have 3 basses at gigs (5 string, Fretless, and Jazz).

Average lifespan of a set of strings?

It really depends on how bright you want your sound. Some guys change every take, or every gig, or every month, year or decade. If you absolutely must have that ultra-bright, metallic, new-string sound, you'll be changing them daily or weekly. I find that you lose that initial brightness in a...

Double Bass What's going on with this tone?

Hard to tell on a small screen, but I don't see a pickup on the bass itself, and it's miked pretty close, so I'm thinking that the house and/or recording engineer(s) put some fairly substantial compression on the bass mike. Most of the tone is the instrument, I'll bet. Great track.

    Removing tone controls from bass

I never use onboard tone and volume; Got a multi-effects (Zoom B2.1) with tone shaping and a volume (among other things) pedal. So I yank out all the extraneous passive components from my basses. Others have said that removing a 250K shunt to ground has little effect, but the fact is if there...

    Using a Boss CE-5 Chorus on a bass......bad thing?

Oh, heavens, yes! You're going to burn in hell for using a guitar effect on bass! :D D'oh. If it sounds good, do it. I knew a guy who wired a 1/4" jack to the tape head of an old portable cassette player and ran the headphone jack to his amp. Distorted like an SOB, but that's what he was...

Crazy stuff you would do/already do on stage...

We used to attack our opening acts with pies and silly string.
