Double Bass Solo vs. Orch rep for auditions

for a section playing job, no, you're not going to use the solo rep. however, for titled chairs, you're probably going to be asked to solo with the orchestra at some point. knowing how to play the standard solo rep will either a. give you something to pull up for that solo opportunity, or b...

Double Bass Batching vs. Whole List Audition Prep

For me, if it's one audition, I definitely approach the whole list as one body of work. Even stuff I've played many many many times (trio, anyone?) I treat as though I'm learning it for the first time. Where I had differing experiences was when I was prepping two auditions at the same time. In...

Double Bass Résumé help and questionable qualitifcations

You wouldn't have any trouble auditioning for smaller regional orchestras, but I think most of the full time ensembles would look at your resume and you would get that classic email: "Due to the high volume of qualified applicants, we are unable to offer you an audition at this time..." Double Bass Playing off beat

i think the goal ultimately is to make your off beat playing feel and sound as natural as your on beat playing. this is a spontaneous suggestion, but maybe when practicing, try alternating between playing those pizzes on the beat for a few bars, then switch to off the beat. when i do off beat...

after months of waiting and checking the TB classifieds daily (and a few snipers stealing my sale while i was working) i finally stepped into a used set of Spiros after being away for many years. i finally have a bass that really accepts them well. the power is intoxicating. orchestra's kicking...

    SOLD 7/8 Hornsteiner w/extension ca.1880

I remember when you bought this - it sounds really great recorded (as evidenced in the examples) but it also has a strong presence and character in person that you can definitely feel. You're about to make someone really happy, Jeremy!

Double Bass Love Pops, want slightly less sticky, what to try?

Give the Kolstein holiday blend a try. I've been finding that it has a lot of the qualities of Pops and plenty of grip, but without the stickiness factor. Although it is a bit more powdery and I've found I have to reapply more often than with Pops, but this is a negligible sacrifice IMO.

Double Bass Arco volume for the practicer/player

Well, you should certainly be able to hear yourself when practicing. But you're on the right track for sure with the realization about volume. There's a point at which additional pressure has diminishing returns and the pressure of the bow on the string actually dampens the vibration of the...
