What year did you start playing bass?

Summer of 1995. Was 19 years old. Had a friend who was a guitar player and was looking to start a band that next school year, so I picked up a used bass and practice amp over the summer and started teaching myself the basics.

So, what were you doing 30 years ago?

30 years...I was just finishing up my freshman year of high school. Hadn’t picked up a bass yet, barely played acoustic guitar in music class in school. Was starting to get into the new thing called grunge, but wasn’t really into the Seattle sound until Vs. from Pearl Jam came out...then I went...

What's the Best rig you've played through?

I’ll second this - the Super Bassman 300 and NEO 610 that I have now is hands down the best rig I’ve played through and/or owned. After I got it, the sound guy we use just smiled during sound check and mentioned multiple times how it was one of the best sounding amps he had heard.

    Where do you stand?

I’ve always stood on the drummer’s right, probably since the first guys I played with the guitar player was on the left on stage. Interestingly enough, when we practiced I would be on the other side in the basement. Go figure. I actually prefer playing on the other side to be closer to the high...

What is the most and the least (outside of nothing), that you have been paid for a gig?

Least? $0.00 Most? Around $200 When I was playing regularly in college to pay the bills, we averaged around $100-150 per night for each of us plus the guy we had running our sound board. That was the only benefit of having our own PA system.

    Jazz bass tone

I have nothing against the J tone, but find myself playing my Ps much more often and almost exclusively when playing live. I do like the shape of the body and the slimmer neck with my smaller hands. I’ve gotten closer to the P by dropping a set of Delano’s with the oversized pole pieces into...

leave clip-on tuner on while performing?

Nope. My clip on tuner stays on my ukulele. For the electric instruments, everything goes thru the tuner on the pedal board.

The perfect strings...have you found yours?

Almost forgot, Curt Manganese strings aren’t too shabby either.

When did you realize you were a bassist?

When I was 16 and the family took a road trip from Indiana, across the country to Yellowstone and Grand Teton NPs, then down to Rocky Mountain NP, before heading back across the country home. Sitting in the back seat of the minivan with my headphones on, I found myself tapping my fingers along...

The perfect strings...have you found yours?

I’m a big fan of Ken Smith Burners, 45-105. Decent price, great sound and seem to last forever. I keep trying others but find myself going back to them again and again

What is the mod that you are really happy with?

Dropping a set of Lindy Fralins in my US Precision and Babicz FCH bridges on my 80’s Japanese P and Power Jazz Bass Special. The Badass II on my US jazz was a pretty good one too

Do you enjoy practicing/playing by yourself?

I think it’s different kind of fun. Of course, I’d prefer to play with others on stage. That is really fun. But, since I have other commitments and don’t get to play out as often as I’d like or want, I use practice at home as my “me time”, a chance to get away from everything that’s going on...

Why did I waste so much time being a pro musician?

Yeah not bad, but long, crappy hours, and most places technology is still stuck in the late 90s/early 2000s

Why did I waste so much time being a pro musician?

After working in air cargo/airlines for the past 22 years, I often find myself wishing for the simpler days of playing for $100 cash and a few beers in whatever place we were hired to play. But what makes me miss it the most is being with friends who all have common interests. I've been...

NVBD - '66 Jazz - dots and binding - super faded Fiesta Red / Tahitian Coral

I'm not usually a fan of coral as a color, but this one is sick looking. Very nice!
