Double Bass All in with 5ths tuning

Hey all, just getting around to posting this one here. Finally got a recording of my playing in fifths with the Steve Grebanier Guild at Hermann's Jazz Club here in Victoria BC this past summer. We did a show of the music of Pat Metheny, and while I am gently shaking my fist at the audio...

Double Bass All in with 5ths tuning

This thread has been a RIDE! I’ve flirted with fifths tuning on EB and DB since I was a kid, but made the leap about three years ago, kinda on a dare with my stand partner (I’m in a military band up in Canada, we play everything). Very similar observations throughout. Work bass (80s Juzek) has...

Double Bass GK or fender or what?

+1 for the SB106. A buddy of mine introduced me to it, and it kills. I played a noisy restaurant gig last night on double bass (Upton hybrid, Realist Lifeline) and had no troubles at all being heard. Haven't tried it with an extension cab yet, but in general this thing is excellent bang for the...

Double Bass Fifths Tuning String Reccs

Interesting about the Obligatos - as a jazz player, is there any kind of consensus on these? I play a mix of jazz and wind ensemble, what's the groupthink on this? I just spoke with my local Pirazzi dealer and I'm trying to not throw up in my mouth a little. String prices are a little...

Double Bass Fifths Tuning String Reccs

Dear The Brain Trust! I’m doing the unconscionable and asking the internet for advice. I play in fifths. I’ve played the Red Mitchell Spiros and they are *super delightful* to bow (please read with a ton of sarcasm). When I first started playing fifths I just tuned E down to C (flabby), A to G...

Double Bass What's the purpose in having a String bass in a concert band?

Also, very much in the hands of the player (and a conversation to have with the conductor) as to what is required/desired. Agree that attack/decay are factors, but blend and tone also have to factor into the mix as well.

Double Bass What's the purpose in having a String bass in a concert band?

Therein lies part of the issue -- these arrangements from Alfred (and Hal Leonard, and, and, and) are geared towards the graded/educational market, and have fairly specific requirements in terms of range, doubles (for missing instrumentation), etc. I've probably said it here before, but it...

Double Bass What's the purpose in having a String bass in a concert band?

100% this. I saw The United States Army Field Band in Renton WA a couple weekends ago and their bassist, Joel, definitely had the secret sauce coming through. I went on to play three shows with them last week and can confirm that no matter the position in the band, hearing yourself is likely...

    Double Bass Wind Band Folx?

Hey all, wondering how many out there are doing the wind ensemble/concert band/wind band thing? Where are my fellow military band peeps at? B.

Double Bass What's the purpose in having a String bass in a concert band?

Depends, too, on what the composer/arranger is after. Sometimes it's textural, and many new writers are very adept at scoring for string bass as its own voice in the ensemble. Sometimes though, it's just straight-up doubling tuba parts.

    Tune in 5ths?

I had a read of this paper last week and took a dive into some of Red's work, specifically an album with Barney Kessel called Two Way Conversation and paid attention to what Bright was talking about with the intervallic work and such. It really informed some changes I made in my next practice...

    Tune in 5ths?

I do, on double bass. Been at it for about six months. Takes a minute to get used to, for sure, and there are definitely pros and cons, especially depending on the style(s) you play. For bass guitar, I could see where the extra shifting could be a pain. Conceptually, it would probably...
