Squier Affinity P/J... How are they?

This. Affinity models are all over the spectrum, but there are some out there with insanely nice necks. Not sure if they came from different production runs or what. My main gigging Jazz Bass has an Affinity P-neck, which i found used after digging thru a dozen or so. My main gigging 6-stringer...

Fender 9050's vs D'addario Chromes for Fender Jazz

9120 tapewounds. Clean, punchy, and zero fretnoise, especially thru my WTDI preamp.

    Ibanez Gio?

Looks like the body on mine is made of multiple pieces glued together. Grain doesn't match at all, and it appears that they may even be different types of wood as well. Not to mention mine has "sanding burns" on the back under the stain. All good though, I bought it with realistic expectations...

    Ibanez Gio?

I decided just to leave the electronics as-is because it sounds so good. I just tweak the input gain on the amp when I switch. Dead strings take off some of the excessive "edge" as well. May try pressurewounds at the next change, dunno yet.

    Ibanez Gio?

Finish on mine is a little funky too. But i got it discounted as a factory 2nd. In the process of swapping out black hardware as well.

    Which strings for "classic" rock?

I'm running Fender tapewounds on all my 4bangers these days. Tonally they're somewhere between rounds and flats, with zero finger noise and good articulation. Going into a "hot" amp, they nail that low-fi 70's OD sound. Eden WTDI preamp gives it a little edge as well. Jazz singles, hot Split-P...

    Squier replacement necks

I'm a big fan of the Indonesian Affinity necks. Ive bought whole guitars just to rob the neck. Hit some used and/or pawn shops and find a neck that "does it" for you. Generally you can grab a complete for $100 or less, and have parts left over. Pic of my current #1 just because.

    Beginner bass

+1 on the suggestions for Ibanez soundgear. I'd add a disclaimer about a model with passive electronics, less to go wrong. Neck is freaking sweet on this sub $200 beast. :)

The end of the 10's. What musically will this decade be remembered by?

In my neck o' the woods, live gigs are making a comeback. Tied in closely with the Americana/Reddirt/Roots revival, and lowered costs of home recording and international internet distribution.

Assembling your own basses vs buying production basses vs modding

My current #1. Paid $60 for the generic Jazz- sounded awesome but neck was shot. Shopped around for a Squier Precision with a neck that i really liked, $90 for it complete. Bolted it together, hand filed a new nut, added tapewounds, and boom...best JB I've ever owned. Have over 100 gigs and...

    Vintage Peavey 1810 project

I love big, ugly, cheap cabs. Got this Hartke for free, original drivers were toast. Plopped in a paid of SA Denali 15's that i got for free in a busted box, and it actually works pretty well. No scientific planning involved, other than "free."

    Fender jazz tone

Fender 9120 tapewound strings, both pickups at 10, tone at 4. Amp eq flat.

Someone should build a killer dirt pedal from this line of heads(Peavey MarkIII/MarkIV content)

Interesting timing on this thread. I've been experimenting lately with my older Max 115 combo in the studio-mainly in regards to the preamp gain in the "Vintage" preamp setting. Playing a Jazz with tapewounds gets REALLY close tonally. Can get a really nasty 70's type SS overdrive that sits...

Yup, that's a 10 minute job. I generally just included it in my annual cleanup routine. No big deal
