    Questions about live shows/gigging

All the advice to upgrade your equipment I agree with. I would like to add that even with no amp, using a DI box to send your signal to the sound board will help everything. A knowledgable sound man will be able to send a mix to your monitor that works for you. If the stage sound level is too...

Opinions - Mic or D.I. Bass Amp to P.A.

My hartke head has xlr out, I use that the most. I have used DI boxes from various brands, they work fine. I set up most of the gear for our gigs, and not only do I prefer direct out for bass, I'm adding jdx boxes for our guitar players, so we can get away from mics on speakers. More constant...

Original bands: How many songs in your catalog?

Two bands I'm now, metal band has about 10 originals, the alt-rock band is writing a couple a month, just recorded our first album. About 12 songs polished, many more still getting used to. Been a member of both bands less than 7 months.

One 4ohm cab or two 8ohm cabs?

I agree, stay with two 8ohm bins, making the 4 ohm load in parallel. If anything, try one 15 inch in conjunction with one 4X10 for deeper response.

    My first studio experience

Saturday one of the bands I'm in went to a local recording studio. I was not sure what to expect, so I was prepared to do a lot of waiting. Instead, the drummer and I played almost all day! The sound engineer wanted drums and bass nailed down first, so the drummer and I finished recording...

What did you do with your first bass?

Still have mine 25 years later. Just had it adjusted and tuned up by a local luthier and it plays better than ever! Can't beat Japanese craftsmanship. Riverhead is a defunct name, but people familiar with guitars comment when they see it, on how close it looks to a Steinberger headless. I'm glad...

looking for a string with an emphasized fundamental and good sustain.

I always liked groundwound strings, a nice compromise between the bright roundwounds and the smooth flatwounds. My favourites were the Blue Steel models, not sure if they still make them...

Photographers, How To Work With Them?

As an aspiring photographer, I must also agree that the photographer is there to capture the story, NOT change it with his presence. Good reporters go by the same rule, don't make the story, capture the story. I have photographed many bands, and the best shots were when I was completely out of...

    Riverhead Owners

I have owned my black Riverhead "unicorn?" 4 string since 1986. I recently had it adjusted by a local luthier and he commented on how nice it played. I will keep this bass forever, no matter how many others I add to my collection. I finally had to get a new gig bag, the original was just worn...

    My first gig

If you feel this band is important to you then show it. Personally, I refuse to drink any alcohol before a performance. I have seen too many musicians get drunk "to calm nerves" and end up useless on stage. They kicked that last member out for not showing up, right? So go the extra mile, bring...
