Belated NBD: Sterling by Musicman SB4

Nice! I dig that maroon color. I saw Low End Lobster demo one in that same color and I thought it sounded and looked pretty good. The 1.5" nut width is appealing to me. I had a Sub Ray 5 a long time ago before I realize I'm not much of a five string guy, so I've been thinking about picking one...

What made the Squier Classic Vibe basses of 2008-2011 so special?

Fender came out with the Modern Player series guitar in 2011 and those were all made in the Chinese factory. As far as I know they were the first Fender branded guitars they made in China.

What made the Squier Classic Vibe basses of 2008-2011 so special?

I had one of the Chinese made Classic Vibe 60s jazz basses. It was a great bass that I kind of regret selling off. It had good fretwork, the pickups sounded good, and I liked the bridge they used on it. It was sturdier than a regular bent steel bridge, but not as bulky as a Badass.

    Thick picks for speed?

I had the opposite experience. Heavy picks were causing fatigue and when I switched to thinner picks it helped tremendously. Now I play 0.60 Ultex or the yellow Tortex depending on my mood.

Tone capacitor in my USA Geddy Jazz... what is it?

A 0.047uf capacitor might be easier to find and you won't be able to tell the difference https://stompboxparts.com/capacitors/metal-film-capacitors-50v-10-pack/

    Pros using a cheap POS?

If you buy a cheaper instrument, have it adjusted and set up properly, then replace the cheaper electronics (if they're even that bad) with pro level stuff, you're not going to be able to tell a difference between it and the same model in a pro version. I've seen plenty of pros playing Squiers...

    Thick picks for speed?

I use those yellow Tortex picks, but the Tortex III version with the pointy tip. Having the sharp tip helps. I used to use the purple big stubby picks back in the day, but I prefer a thinner pick for most things now. Paul Gilbert has been using thin 0.5mm picks for a few years and he can still...

    Bootsy's Home Studio

It's really cool that he let them come in and check out the studio. It's sort of like if I managed to put a studio together, that's what it would be like. A couple of weeks ago I heard that he was making another album with Buckethead. Long live Bootsy

Jamie Lee Curtis thinks bands should start playing matinee concerts

I'd guess that a majority of people work in the afternoon and that's why concerts are in the evening. I'd love to go to concerts in the afternoon though.

Neck dive... why is it a problem?

I hate the feeling of a strap pulling at my shirt. A friend gave me a nice wide leather strap for my SG and I feel bad because I can't stand to use it because of how it feels on my shoulder. My usual strap is one of those Couch straps made from recycled seat belt material and it's much more...

On the fence about sterling ray 34

Sounds like the guitar player needs to get over it. The rest of the band likes the bass tone. I would not be happy with some egocentric guitarist messing with my amp unless I asked.

    Recent pawn shop finds

Found this Acoustic 370 head at a pawn shop in Indianapolis for $150. Not an amazing deal, but ok I think. The 300hz and 400hz EQ sliders don't work, so I might have to replace the inductors. I haven't really looked into it yet. I heard that Nick Oliveri and Queens of the Stone Age used it in...

La Bella DTFs vs LTFs on Precision bass

The strings got delayed a couple days. They finally showed up today. All I can say is, "WOW!" I love these strings. They're not any stiffer than the roto rounds that were on it before and they are so smooth. It is an absolute delight to slide around into different positions on the fretboard...
