Show me your cheap basses with expensive upgrades

Not mine, but my Son's Yamaha TRBX174EW. He was looking for something cheap to keep in his bands studio. He picked it up in like new condition on Marketplace for $100, we installed a set of Quarter Pounders in it. Not a hugely expensive mod, but definitely a big improvement. He prefers it to...

The official "Show your basses" thread part 19!

Yeah, it sounds and plays great. It just needs a set of flats on it. I typically build with spare parts and upgrade later if it's worth it. This one's definitely worth it, I have a set of Quarter Pounders for it.

The official "Show your basses" thread part 19!

My latest home build. 30 inch scale, Alder body, Maple reverse headstock C shaped neck with 12 inch radius 20 fret Rosewood fretboard, Cherry pickguard, 4 way reverse Tele controls, the reverse P and J pickups are from the spare parts bin, The tuners are an old set of Grovers I had on...

    First build

Got them from an old friend in Ky, unfortunately he retired. It's a shame , he did really nice work. I bought this one and a matching 5 string neck from him and both are very good quality and have a great feel.

    First build

It's proven itself worthy of a set of Duncan 1/4 pounders, Mojotone controls, hi mass bridge and Grover tuners. It quickly became my primary player and is the best playing short scale I've ever seen. I like it well enough that I've been working on a 2nd one with J pups, 4 way Tele controls and a...

A couple of new build since I last posted.

Not well, but I expected that going into the project. I only play seated due to medical issues so neck isn't quite as much of an problem. The pickup rings are for covered Tele.style.pickups they fit a little tight but they work.

I really like pressure would strings....

You might try D'Addario half rounds, similar in feel and tone and I believe they have the set you are looking for.

The Official Short Scale Bass Club -- Part 4

I'll join up. I'm a short scale guy from way back. Current stable included a G2220 a home built 29.75 inch Strat Bass and 2 homebuilt 30 inch offsets, configured as a PJ and a JJ with J and 4 way reversed Tele controls respectively. I'm still amazed by how good the 2220 is for it's price point.

What's a great sounding mini amp?

I use a Hartke HD 50 as a practice amp, when I need to keep it down I use Mackie MC 250 headphones. I've found it to be a good combo. They also have an HD 25 combo if you'd prefer something smaller. I noticed the ZOOM BX 4 mentioned it makes a reasonably good headphone amp and has plenty of...

A couple of new build since I last posted.

I recently completed a Tele bodied 34 inch with 50's style single coils in a 70's J bass layout, added a 4 way switch and reversed the pots. I opted for a set of cheap pick ups for the set up with the intention of upgrading to Seymour Duncan Antiquity II's later. I ordered a pair of LYWS pickups...

The OFFICIAL "Gretsch Bass Owners Club"

I see no reason not to, in fact I've been planning to do exactly that to mine. Already have the pots, the cap and 4 spare G Arrow knobs. I just have to many projects going to get to it.

Agreed, it's hard to believe how much the $300 instrument has improved over the years. I was sceptical but loved the look and assumed being a Gretsch it wouldn't be "that bad". My 2220 holds its own against it's stable mates past and present. Yamaha's, G&L's, Fenders, Washburns, etc.
