You could bounce your thumb "through" the string.

Turn the bass all the way up, the treble all the way down, and then play over the end of the fret board. I have found it also helps to turn your amp way up and play really soft with your right hand.

I use an Ampeg BA 115 for every thing. It's built like a tank and can hold up to any venue I've played. It lacks some deffinition in the mids, but i have never had any complaints.
