For those who play 4-stringers only

Actually, I switch on and off between 4 and 5 stringers. . . Depends upon my mood and what we'll be playing that set. However, I do dig a booming low D, so sometimes I just detune my E string, sometimes I use one of my octave options. Again, though, if I know I need those lower notes through...

Boss AW-3, dont quite understand the hate

Congratulations! You've discovered one of the truths of effects . . . Everyone's mileage varies. Do I like the aw3? Not really. Do you? Yes. Do others? Some do, some don't. :smug: As for you, play through it and enjoy it. That's what it's about. Does it work for what YOU need it...

Which bass overdrive to go with?

Amongst your three choices, give the digitech bass driver a shot. Picked mine up used for $30 and it's pretty darn versatile. Can do mild overdrive to a pretty good buzz. Clean blend and gain work in a more linear fashion than the ODB 3, which I own too. The ODB 3 does have a pretty solid...

    Transparent Fuzz

I'd agree . . . The BDDI should be on your short list. It's too bright for my tastes, but, of course, your mileage shall be diff'rent from mine!

what's the best overdrive to add grit warmth...not for metal?

I'm a fan of the EHX English Muff'n. Picked it up used and haven't put it down. Some people have mentioned capacitors swaps to add bass, but mine appear to be stock . . . And the thing sounds great. Now, if you want to go far into overdrivenland, you might benefit from a blender. But, for...

    Best bass for me?

Umm, a P bass? :eyebrow: Play a bunch, snag the one that you like the most and if it's used, throw on some new strings for the 'clang'.

What kind of distortion do you use?

+1! I just gave this pedal a 'what the heck' tryout one day and had to have it. Got it for 30 and haven't looked back. It can get wild, but I use it as a 'predistortion' . . . Umm, if that's even a word. The blend control works far better than the one on an odb3.

    Anybody stopped using their Sansamp?

This! The darn thing comes and goes like a bad penny. I won't offload it since it does come in handy. But, when it gets used 'too much', away it goes . . .

    Thank you!

Just a former lurker here. I offer my heartfelt thanks to the dozens of posters who have offered their sage advice as to the best effect / bass / amp over the years and into the TB archives. This is a refreshing site for a 20 year bass veteran . . . Gave me the guts to use a Boss ODB at church...
