Stop by Macari's and tell Ant I said hi. Try out everything you can get your hands on and see what suits your hand, ear, back and wallet. Personally, I like Warwicks, but even that varies sometimes.
As the power cord is damaged, it is being replaced. I'd bet anybody a buck that the cord currently on there is from a vacuum cleaner. After that, we'll give it a try.
One nice thing, the tubes are oddball, but at least not crazy expensive.
Picked up a nice 1968 Oliver P500 head the other day. As is normal with an amp of this age, i will definitely change out the power cord and filter caps. It has Mullard preamp tubes and a pair of RCA 7027 output tubes. It's in good shape overall, can't wait to get it up and fully functional...
I understand the science behind it, but don't care who does what as long as it sounds good and doesn't blow up. What sounds good is a matter of opinion, and we all know about that.
I say carrots to the whole thing. If it sounds good to your ears, roll with it. If that also gets a troll's...
Driver size has no impact on whether a cab sounds deep, tight, punchy, etc. Any size cab can sound any which way. It depends on how the cab and drivers interact.
Sorry if this comes off as snarky. It's been a long day already.
Don't worry about the old speaker too much. Concentrate on finding a 4 ohm driver that will work well in the cabinet. How much cabinet volume is there to work with?
There are plenty of folks here who can help you determine which is the best driver for your amp, cab and budget.
Thanks for...
When considering adding any speaker configuration with the big Ben, i'd still use a crossover. How you do that is up to you. An outboard preamp crossover feeding a 2 channel amp would provide the greatest flexibility, but that may not be the route that works best for you. Just my humble opinion.
What about building a small outboard cab to house a crossover, mid and tweeter? IIRC, I saw a kit for this somewhere on speakerhardware.com .
I had on of these cabs long ago, and yes, the driver was a Bag End. Killer cab.
