What Bass should I buy?

If you like both Precision and StingRay basses, I recommend checking an Old Smoothie.

It doesn't have two humbuckers or 5 strings, but sound-wise it stays between a common Precision and StingRay.

If you insist on 5 strings & 2 pickups, I would recommend:

• StingRay Special 5 HH
• Lakland 55-something
• G&L L-2500

Another vote for the G&L L-2500, or its polite little sister the M-2500. You can buy used and save $$$, or order new and get EVERY SINGLE feature of your own choosing!

Whereabouts in the UK? If there was any way you could manage a day trip to the Bass Gallery in London (The Bass Gallery | London) or the bass room at Andertons in Guildford if you’re south of London, you will get great advice from experienced players (the staff know their stuff) and a whole bunch of basses to try. Not feasible at the moment under lockdown I know (and even outside lockdowns you would need to book a session in advance) but by far the best way to explore options and find something that works for you (and both of those shops have secondhand gear as well as new). Could be a lot easier than trying various basses through mail order and organising returns etc.

Will definitely check them both out, as I'm not far from Guildford! Cheers

I'm in the process of buying my "First" Bass even though i've been playing for more then 10 years. Time for the greatest lending gift to be upgraded.

I predominantly play in a Pentecostal church which always plays a mix of Rock, Contemporary Worship & Gospel. I want to get a 5 String & I like the idea of have dual hum bucker pickups (1 at Bridge & 1 at Neck)

Budget not really an issue but don't have loads of ££££'s

Any pointers in which route I should go down?
I like the look of MusicMan Stingray & P Basses.

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

I had a go on an Ibanez SR305. The neck is thin for a 5 string, about the same as my Aria 4 string. It has 2 humbuckers, and the active EQ gives a wide range of tones. Get to a shop and try some basses. The feel must come before the look.

IF you have to ask, find a Precision Bass or a decent copy somewhere, and play it until you know what you like and dislike about it-- then go shopping.

Stop by Macari's and tell Ant I said hi. Try out everything you can get your hands on and see what suits your hand, ear, back and wallet. Personally, I like Warwicks, but even that varies sometimes.

Go to your local music go round and see if they have a used bass that you like
