Roasted maple neck on Sire D5--too roasted?

POSTSCRIPT: A happy ending. First of all, thanks to all here that engaged and contributed. Great conversation. Based on additional research, no one has said that there were likely any structural issues with that neck, but I just wasn't feeling the complete and unqualified love. Late yesterday...

Roasted maple neck on Sire D5--too roasted?

Thanks for the article. Interesting passage: "This colour change occurs due to chemical reactions between the wood’s proteins and its natural sugars, and torrefied maple can range from soft amber to a deep reddish brown that is closer to cherry or even walnut." It would seem this bass has that...

Roasted maple neck on Sire D5--too roasted?

Nada, which is curious and raises the question of how deep into the neck the dark roast is? Certainly can't tell from the pix--maybe once it's in the flesh....

Roasted maple neck on Sire D5--too roasted?

Hard to tell, but from the pix on the Sire site, the neck looks to be one piece with no separate fretboard.

Roasted maple neck on Sire D5--too roasted?

Nice! Much lighter neck and headstock. BTW: Great grain in the alder body. Enjoy it when it shows up!

Roasted maple neck on Sire D5--too roasted?

Thanks. My weak analogy is roasted marshmallows: big difference in taste and texture between golden brown and charcoaled.

Roasted maple neck on Sire D5--too roasted?

So my long-awaited D5 finally showed up at Sweetwater. In reviewing the pix (see enclosed) before I finalize the purchase, however, I noticed that there appears to be a huge variation in color--much darker--from the headstock down into the seventh fret. Coloration on the back of the neck looks...

Tuner bushings pulling out of headstock on Jack Casady bass

That will likely happen if/when these pull out again or when the penny jar is full once more--I'd do the Ultralite tuners at the same time.

Tuner bushings pulling out of headstock on Jack Casady bass

UPDATE: After the bridge posts pulled out and wondering how to properly deal with the tuner posts without messing with the finish on the headstock, I decided to let a pro deal with it. Took it to a new repair shop, Guitar Hut, here in Lafayette, Colo., and Even did a great job of putting the...

Tuner bushings pulling out of headstock on Jack Casady bass

Gotta ask--What motivated you to make the switch? Did you play your JCB with the stock hardware before you went to the Hipshot stuff? Was the investment worth it?

Tuner bushings pulling out of headstock on Jack Casady bass

Hey. Thanks again for your wisdom and experience. I'm also wondering now if the change in humidity from Ohio--where the bass came from--to much less humidity here in Colorado may have contributed to the problem. Seems like the wood would have a tendency to shrink a bit. Can't wait to get this...

Tuner bushings pulling out of headstock on Jack Casady bass

Thanks much for the info and tips--I've read about split headstocks and cracked or chipped finishes. Looks like I'll need lots of glue. As I was attempting just now to lower the action by lowering the bridge/tailpiece, both of the back bushings pulled out. Trying to figure out how to clamp the...

Tuner bushings pulling out of headstock on Jack Casady bass

I picked up an otherwise really nice 2011 Jack Casady bass in black a couple of weeks ago and just noticed that the tuner bushings for all four strings are pulling out (at the top of each tuner) of the headstock. I have an inquiry in to Epiphone (no response yet) and certainly have seen the...
