5 string B string gauge for standard and drop A?

Generally I use D’addarios but any nickel wound string is good enough for me I generally favor whatever my guitar store has in gauges that I like

5 string B string gauge for standard and drop A?

I’m looking for a B string gauge that can function on a standard 34” scale 5 string that could also be tuned down a whole step to A without being too floppy. I like heavy strings so it being tight in standard isn’t too much of an issue for me. Any suggestions? I plan to use 50-105 or heavier for...

Double Bass Hand Pain from Digging In

Thanks for all the advice guys! I did switch to weichs and I like the tone I get a lot better, and it’s much easier on my hands. I’ve been working on trying to use more of my upper muscles to play, as many of you suggested, and although that has helped a lot, I still have some issues with my...

Double Bass Hand Pain from Digging In

I’m switching from spirocore mittels to weichs tonight. I play a 4/4 anyways so the mittels sound a little choked anyways imo.

Double Bass Hand Pain from Digging In

I’m 18, so it won’t have anything to do with the long-term health problems like you mentioned. Basically everything below my elbow feels at least a little off, but at the moment it’s worst in my elbow, the underside of my forearm near my wrist, and between my thumb and first finger. Hopefully...

Double Bass Hand Pain from Digging In

I've been playing jazz double bass for years now, and struggled with right hand pain a bit in the past. For a while I stopped digging in hard and that fixed the issue, but I'm not getting the same kind of sound that I got when I dug in more, and that's the sound I'm really looking for. I've...

Double Bass Where to measure for string height?

I should really probably know this by now but where do you measure for string height? In the middle of the string or at the end of the fingerboard? When people talk about like 7/8/9/10mm are they talking about at the end of the fingerboard?

Double Bass French Grasp Hand Hurting

Hi I’m a double bass player who’s new to the French hold but has played a bit of German. My hand really hurts when I play French for a while and I don’t know how to fix it. Any tips?

Double Bass Why isn't Jazz that popular? (DB forum thread)

At one point jazz music was pop music. Different things become popular over time. There’s a lot of things you can blame for the downfall of jazz but I honestly think it just comes down to the fact that what people like changes. Jazz was popular, so was rock, and funk, and classical, but they...

Double Bass Is Bebop Vocab Still Relevant to Learn?

That dude kinda sounds like a douchebag I would say if you wanna learn bebop language learn it. It sounds awesome and is still applicable even in modern jazz.

Double Bass How hard to pluck

I’m 100% in the camp of playing as loud as possible. If I have an amp I might lay back a little bit, but I think any upright player should have the ability to play unplugged, and if they have an amp, as much sound should be coming from the bass as possible, as that produces the best tone.

Double Bass Developing Right Hand Technique

Go to a jam sesh and play unplugged and you’ll develop good tone pretty quickly just from trying to be loud enough.

Double Bass Christmas time is here (yes, I know it’s early) harmonization question

Yeah it’s the 13 it should sound fine. Best way to find out is to play the note over the chord and just see what it sounds like. I don’t think it needs to be any more complicated than that. If you mean a C in the bass of the chord I don’t know. It probably won’t sound dissonant but it might...

Double Bass Classical vs Jazz bowing

So I’m a jazz player who’s been learning some classical recently and just bowing in general as I never learned it when I started playing, and I’ve noticed that classical players and jazz players have very different bow sounds. Jazz bowing is a lot more scratchy and midrangey, whereas classical...
