That dude kinda sounds like a douchebag I would say if you wanna learn bebop language learn it. It sounds awesome and is still applicable even in modern jazz.

I’m 100% in the camp of playing as loud as possible. If I have an amp I might lay back a little bit, but I think any upright player should have the ability to play unplugged, and if they have an amp, as much sound should be coming from the bass as possible, as that produces the best tone.

Go to a jam sesh and play unplugged and you’ll develop good tone pretty quickly just from trying to be loud enough.
