We were recording rehearsals just to capture spontaneous jam ideas using a zoom H1N, and it was OK for that purpose. The recordings weren't for outside consumption so we didn't bother much with adjusting levels and recorder positioning to get the mix just right. It might work for you though...

I have no need for intentionally learning words in order to do my part, any more than I need to learn a different instrument's part. I'm kind of strange like that, I don't tend to focus on lyrics that much, I just hear the voice as another instrument making sound and I am not paying much...

I guess I do a little bit of this- I like just enough to feel a little bit in the floor. But honestly its not necessary. If you have decent IEMs and most importantly they make a good tight seal in your ears, you can get good bass.

Lol I had a similar one, but it was a college guy, not an old guy. We went to to jam and he had no cymbals or hihats. Ok for maybe one practice, but not gonna work long term for a 3 piece rock band. He had left them at home (like 45 miles away) but would bring them next weekend. No problem...

Sounds eerily familiar, though my guy had a lot more gear. :D I think there are just some folks who really like gear, and really want to be able to play it, but just don't put enough time into actually playing the gear.

Earplugs - Do this now. Those same people won't be able to hear you in a few years when you tell them how wrong they were.

I approximate the bass in songs, but I see no need in trying to copy the recordings exactly. I'm playing rock in a 3 piece. Not to mention, in a 3 piece, almost any song you play is going to be missing other parts that are present in the recording - more guitars, keyboards, etc. So I might...

I have had this happen, but maybe only a few times in decades of playing. I'd say it is very rare, but likely due to a defect in the string, or possibly a twist in the string that put it under additional stresses as you tightened.
