    Question for you pick players

I use .73 thickness. Very comfortable and good sound.

    “Feeling” the bass

Then you just have to deal with whatever they provide, play as well as you can, and hope it sounds good to the audience.

Awful set list is better than not playing at all

Over the years, I figured one thing out: If I want to actually make good money as bassist/musician, I need to be in groups that play music the AUDIENCE wants to hear, not really what I want to play. Once I came to terms with that, I made a lot more money... and had a ton of fun.

    “Feeling” the bass

In my 30+ years playing, I never set an amp face down. Usually, it's the other way around- people hate how they only feel the bass, but there is no presence or articulation. I say leave it alone, you are where you need to be. Or, if you really need to "feel" it, buy your own powered cabinet...

Seeking the Joe Osborn sound: foam mute a good or bad idea?

1960 Stack Knob Jazz, LaBella flats that he kept on a very long time, neck pickup soloed, rested his hand on the pickup cover while he picked. In my opinion, one of the best bass tones in the history of recorded music. That being said, the feel of the way he played really set it apart more than...

I like my Longhorns because they sound awesome and are easy to play. Simple as that.

When did weight become the top priority in a bass?

I found that trying to improve my posture while playing helped eliminate back problems more than the weight of the bass. Shoulders back, tighten your core...

How often do BL's request you use a particular bass?

Never in my 30+ years of playing have I had this happen. I guess I am just lucky!

Is it sacrilege to put flats on my 4003 Rick ?

I have them on mine, sounds great. You do you.

NBD - Jerry Jones Longhorn Bass

I have one, strung with flats, always play with a pick. Best bass I've ever owned, and if it ever becomes your #1, you will not regret it. I play mine live, recorded, etc., and it always sounds great in ANY form of music.

Short scale, flatwounds, and a pick

Been playing short scales with flats with a pick for over 20 years. When I started doing this, my tone was (and still is) crystal clear and well defined in studio settings and live.

    Playing 4 string songs on a 5...

You can use the 5th string still?... I don't think it really matters if you play a song that was recorded on a 4 string on a 5 string bass.
