    Low Tension Strings

I use 40-95's on my 78 4001 for the same reason and really like the sound I get. Using typical strings (D'Addario, GHS, Ernie Ball, etc) I personally wouldn't feel comfortable doing any higher. DR Sunbeams (or even DR's hex core - they're still lower tension than the others) I'd probably go...

What would be a nice complement to my MM Stingray?

I have a Stingray and an L-1000. Great compliment to each other, but the way I use the L-1000 could probably be done with a P-bass just as well. Both are awesome in my book.

How often do you change ur roundwounds?

1-2 months, depending on how often I'm playing live shows where the sweat really pours out. That's mostly with GHS Boomers. I'm trying out some DR nickel lo-riders which seem to last a bit longer.

Does anyone know if there was such a thing at a 1978 Stingray with a Rosewood fretboard?

    Gear for Playing with Pick?

I really like the Dunlop gator grip picks. They feel and sound similar to the Delrins, and the 1.14 comes in a nice blue/green color instead of the purple (they change color a bit once you use them.) I like the .96 of this family a lot as well. The gator grips and the Delrins have much less...

    Wear-and-Tear: Good or Bad?

Another reason I like to buy beat up used guitars is they generally come at a really nice price. If I'm buying something with the intention of just playing it (ie: not buying it as a collectable piece) beat up guitars are the best of them all. They still feel and sound as good as one in...

    Wear-and-Tear: Good or Bad?

Hard to capture all the wear.. there's a lot of dents that aren't coming through in the photos.. but here's a few. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] And the case it came in...

    Wear-and-Tear: Good or Bad?

I love the look of a legitimately beat-up guitar/bass. I have a Stingray that I picked up used from a guy who used to play with a relatively well-known band called Death Angel. Toured all over the world with it, beat it to hell and back. It has more chips and dings in it than I can count and...

the official "Show your basses" thread part 13!

New to the forums but not new to the low frequencies. 3 out 5 of the ones I own, but these are the heavy hitters. 1978 Rickenbacker 4001 1981 G&L L-1000 Hog Mid-2000's beat up Stingray [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] The G&L is the latest addition and is now my favorite. The sound...

    strap locks?

I like Schallers - but ALWAYS use Loctite on the nut that attaches to the guitar strap. I had a bass hit the concrete floor right in front of me due to the nut slowing coming loose. A little bit of blue loctite and it never happened again. I've also had the experience of the metal on metal...

What made you decide to play bass?

When I was around 11 years (1989) old my friends and I decided we were going to be in a band (so we could be cool like Guns n Roses and Metallica), and somehow determined what instrument each person would play before we ever plucked a single string. I ended up on bass, and I also ended up being...

    Stiffer Strings

My experience with DR nickel lo-riders is they end up having a looser tension than a lot of other strings. My Stingray is setup on GHS Boomers 45-100, when I put on a set of 45-100 Nickel Lo-Riders my strings dropped 1/32" due to the lower tension and would have required at least a truss rod...

    How to clean/polish fingerboard?

I do this every restring: 1. Gorgomyte to clean everything up (I've made some seriously green frets shine again with this stuff) 2. Fret Doctor or Dunlop Ultimate Lemon Oil.
