SN B006592, Neck Date FEB 27, 1978
Excellent condition. All original. Three tone sunburst.
Some chips in finish around bottom strap button. Otherwise only minor typical playing wear.
Hardshell case.

Yes, rosewood board was always an option back then. But maple was more popular.

Even though you don't see a lot burst Rays that's a silly price.

To me "chip" implies paint loss(like on this bass), ding does not always mean that there's paint missing.

The earliest catalogs only listed maple necks for both basses and guitars. The first one to show other necks was the '81 catalog, which showed rosewood and ebony as options as well as two neck widths. I think in '78 it was only maple officially. However, I've seen a fretless maple StingRay from '79, before it was an option.

Fretless Rosewood was available from 1976 to the end of 1979 before it changed to Ebony.

Fretted Rosewood became available at the end of 1979. Before that it was only fretted Maple.

That maybe in the catalogs, but there are rosewood board Rays dating back into 77. Not many, but they still were made, and you can see for yourself in the serial database.

BTW, my Sabre has a rosewood board and a 79 neck date.

But back on topic...that CL bass is severely overpriced. You can find nice preEB Rays all day long in the 2000-2500 range by private sellers. Most dealers are at 2999 asking prices.

I just got a 1988 MMSR4 for $540 from guitar center. It's coral red with a birdseye maple gloss neck. Just has minor play wear on it but it plays & sounds like a God.
