Yeah, it’s tricky. If you don’t mute the already raked strings it becomes a mess.

I’d fret those with my pinky and ring finger, almost like how you would do a barre chord on guitar. Put em down flat on the strings, not with just the tip. With right hand I’d rake or use my thumb, index and middle finger.

Depending on how much experience you have with woodworking, maybe try building a regular bass, first?
