I am an exish drummer and have a Roc N Soc. Love 'em. I have a backrest for mine which gave me a little lumbar support and helped my back not get tight. I like them well enough that we got them for work with foot ring and wheels for task chairs.

The book does introduce thumb position early, but so far, the thumb has been for harmonics. Much lighter pressure needed from the side of the thumb.

If I am assuming correctly that the thumb pushes the string down from the side of the thumb, then there is not much leverage and it doesn't feel great. This isn't for weenies.
