Double Bass My favorite bass stool

I've been primarily a standing player for the last 5 years or so, but recently I've experimented with playing seated again, too.

In the old days, I used to use a tall drum throne, an idea suggested to me by Paul Erhard when he was in town to play the Rota Divertimento Concertante. At the time I found a decent drum stool, but it was a bit wobbly as it got into the height that I wanted, and it was hard to keep it tight enough not to rotate as I pushed against it.

I did a bit of digging and ran across this one by König & Meyer:

I was intrigued. K&M makes a variety of nice looking chairs, including this excellent looking seat sold by Gollihur:

Ultimate Adjustable Performance Folding Stool

However, I feel reasonably strongly that I don't want that kind of footprint on the ground - the tripod makes sense to me, and it leaves open the possibility of adding a Xeros endpin anchor.

I've had the 14052 stool for a few weeks now and I'm pretty happy with it. Its adjustability isn't infinite, and it relies on a set screw to keep the stool from rotating, but in practice that hasn't been a big problem for me - I have a height setting I like and the chair holds still. It's about the same weight or slightly lighter than the drum throne it replaced. I use it with a black yoga block under my left foot. I may use a yoga block under my right, too, but that's an extra thing to carry and it makes using a pedal page turner harder.

I'm still curious about the 14047 configuration that Gollihur sells, because in practice I'm not using a Xeros style endpin anchor, but it's a lot heavier and bigger so it might be a hassle to lug around.

Note that for folks in the US, you can find the K&M 14052 at a bunch of retailers, but they mark it up quite a bit. Shipping to the US from Thomann was like $60, but their price even with the expensive shipping was still way cheaper than, eg, Amazon or B&H or other retailers.

That second one is what I use for gigs. I removed the footrest and play with it all the way down with both feet on the floor. At home I use a Roc n Soc drum throne. Very happy with both after a lot of searching for a solution earlier this year. It can be hard to find a rock solid adjustable stool for that in-between regular chair and bar stool height. I sit at 23-24 inches.

I am an exish drummer and have a Roc N Soc. Love 'em. I have a backrest for mine which gave me a little lumbar support and helped my back not get tight. I like them well enough that we got them for work with foot ring and wheels for task chairs.
