My vote goes to the 1001-rb II...post eq of course

Boost 1.6 khz, 4.0 khz And healthy cut at 500 hz. Try a boss geb7 for a cheap eq

What distortion patch are you using? What's your eq look like? For muse.... I use the guvnor ...(marshall)...patch, gain at 65. Bass -2 ...treb/tone. -3. Dry signal at 40.......wet at 60

Imao- symmetrical clipping consist of multiple diodes that breakup the signal at equal rates....smooth even distortion Assymetrical normaly has a more mid-scooped agressive/messy sound...as the diodes normaly clipp at different values, adding in odd high end harmonics.....think super solid...

Id try and find a DBX-166a ...great 2 channel unit with peakstop, and noise gate. Plus its bongo approved ;)

Is your vt bass an always on effect, as a tone shaper? If so, that could lead to some low end growl/distortion

I had a the same problem not to long ago w/ my gk1001rb ii. What I ended up doing was, to cut out some of the low/sub bass in the 30-50 hz range. Doing this before the preamp cleaned up my signal, enabling me to increase the gain before clipping. Give this a try, might be...
