Y'all are a wealth of knowledge! Sooooo..... if you aren't using a bow - strictly pizz - and want some short-sustain horsepower out of an old Moretone and an old AS, would you go Lyon G and Pistoy D? Currently running braided Innovations on A and E.

Considering trying the Gamut guts on my G and D, and I know a popular combo is the Lyon medium G and a light Pistoy D. The questions: how is that combo for a short sustain? How is the Pistoy for slap? And how is varnish vs. no varnish for slap? Strictly a pizz player in the high-humidity south.

I like guts - the feel and the sound. Can lay into it and drive it back down the banjo with a good mando chop. I'm an American Standard / King guy vs. Kay, but have heard some good Kays. A lot of it comes down to the driver.

Jason was a fantastic musician and a really great guy. His playing was a lesson in timing, tone, and note choice. He had an old-school approach that suited everything he was involved in. Gone entirely too soon.
